I've bought CaCl in a large (75lbs?) bag sold as "dust control" for construction workplaces... Was far cheaper than anything sold for ice melt.
Works great
(Bought it in summer tho)

I cleaned 1 half of the glass today, so I could see some of the punky wood burn… I may have forgotten to do it before i re-lit it again 🤣

Just loaded the overnight dragon's feast. Black and honey locusts with a side dish of red oak. All on a nice bed of coals of ash, honey locust and red oak. Quite windy out with dropping temps. A bit early to make it to 6am with a good remaining coal bed. I already nodded off on the coach and the GF woke me for bed.

We'll see what happens.

Got home from NH around mid afternoon to a house of 63. After a few hours back up to 72. Oak and maple, same for tonight that I just loaded the stove with. (One pic of each). Wasn’t thrilled with overnight load stacking. Had some odd shaped pieces as well as one that was a bit long so had to put it in slightly crooked.

Started the stove with a split of pine and a split of spruce.
Today was 35-40 for the longest times, foggy over the snow, a LOT of rain, wind from the north, but around 4 pm it suddenly (as in 30 minutes) shot up to 51 F and I saw the wind coming from the south.

36 outside now, howling wind. Going down to 26.
Reload with a few splits of oak and the rest maple.

-15/70 Here we go again, extreme cold weather warnings! Hopefully this will be the last of this! I have a half cord of Oak and half cord of Aspen left to burn this season but I can also break into my sauna stove reserve if needed.

Got up a bit before 6am to a chill in the house. The driving winds reeked havoc all night. Still going strong. At one point it had pushed out one of my homemade interior storms in a bathroom. It was 11* with a wind wrecker of -16*.

Quite the tossed salad variety of splits for a boost in heat this am. Sugar and norway maples, a split of black locust, with some pieces of red oak. A couple splits of cherry (wild and black), and topped with honey locust.

Hour and a half later, one cup of joe down, the storm is refitted in the window, and the house is back up to temp.
Morning fellas.

Remember back in November when we were all saying "where's the cold weather this year...?)?

7 pieces of ash with 1 each small pine & aspen for fillers. -6/-16. Cold Advisory until 11, then another starts this evening. Kept the heaters from kicking on last night...

Yes I do. That's when silver maple was worth it's weight.
Now....not so much. LOL

20’s and very high wind gust here. Got stove cranking 675 STT. Mix of maple, ash and oak. Main floor 70 now but took a bit still have first load of the morning in. Bringing more wood in today. Very cold and windy the next few days.

Last night it was 9.9 out, the basement started out at 73 with the temps up here 67 & 68. The overnight load was 7 splits of beech.

This morning the outside temp was 4.1, the basement temp started out at 72, I'm not sure what the temps were up her since I headed to the basement, the first fire of the day was 7 splits of beech. The wife did turn the furnace on this morning until coffee was done.

Cold and windy here too. 27 degrees with 22mph winds gusting to 45. Dropping to 11 degrees tonight.
First load of oak/ash went in around 5:30 this morning. Just put my second load in now at 1:30.
Lucky it’s sunny out today. House faces due south with lots of windows/ skylights for solar gain. I lose a lot overnight and on cloudy days though. But sure is nice when it’s sunny out.

Similar boat here with the solar gains. Windy and no sun is tough.

It's up to 0/-9, but sunny so the house is warmed up nicely. I might even be able to get some ash out later before the sun goes down.

Stuffed it full of ash this morning and adding shoulder season wood as necessary to burn down coals and keep temperatures up.

I misspoke. A few (4) splits of oak,.one maple, and the rest spruce...
That's fine now, barring the oak coals.
Some spruce now.
32 outside, up from a low of 24. Howling winds but fairly sunny.
72 upstairs.

The 6 smallish spruce splits are done. Two pine now before an oak reload for the night.

GF came home from work and shortly after we left for the grocery store. After we got back and made dinner, the chill in the living room said something was wrong. Looked in the bathroom to find my interior storm popped out on the bottom side this time. We've had some pretty windy days with no issues. Not sure why the wind has been causing problems now after the whole season is almost past. It's almost like I'm being sabotaged. LOL

One big black ash round of 7'' diameter, some honey and black locust splits, red oak, and shagbark in now. They're working on spilling their BTUs into the house. Air is open and the dragon is angrily breathing hard.

28 outside, going down to 17. Still very windy. Upstairs 71.
Red oak.

On my 3rd reload. Mix of oak, elm, ash and maple. 6 splits. STT 675. House staying at 75 main floor and upstairs 72. Very windy, outside temp 21. Going to 14.

NG delivery charges are crazy high. All over the Boston news today. Will reload later to keep the heat from calling which is set to 64.
