Reloaded around 7 with ash and oak and a little maple. STT was still 350 after 8 hours or so. Bedrooms are 63-65, main room 69-70. I think my youngest closed his door after he got up to pee last night so his room was a bit colder than usual.

Plenty of big coals that had to be broken up. 20 out with a wind chill of 14. Next few days supposed to be colder and more windy than it has been.

Might have to empty some ash later when the stove is hot, starting to build up.

STT 675-700 and warming up more in here.

Oak, ash and maple for the night. Reloaded at 200 STT. Low of 21 tonight with wind chill in low teens. Currently 70 in the main rooms and 65 in our bedroom.

I almost questioned who’s posts these were, I usually automatically know by the pics when it’s one of yours with your signature E/W top piece 😎

Anyhow ☕️ time I woke up to the house at 65, not bad but I prefer 68 to 70. I undershot the thermostat setting for the temps forecast. With that being said I have plenty of oak left in the stove so I cranked the stat to the 330 position and we’re back up to 68 already. I may do a mid day spruce load to carry us through to the overnight load. No wind today so I plan on restocking the porch racks as well.

Haha nice. I’m restocking my rack today too. Pulling out some junk wood (a lot of the birch small rounds don’t burn worth a crap). Not wet all, they just don’t burn for some reason. They’re a few years old with some rot so that probably has a lot to do with it. They’re birch doesn’t seem to burn if there is even a little rot.

And yes I do like loading N/S with E/W kindling. It works great for me.

Birch really holds in the water in round form from what I have read. Supposedly they will rot completely out yet leave the bark intact.
I score birch logs with 2 lines all the way through the bark end to end if I know I won't get to css them soon. It seems to really help. This also helps smaller diameter stuff that isn't getting split to dry instead of rot.

The pine lasted 12 hrs. 29 now, a high of 31. Upstairs is 70.
I'll be feeding more pine during the day.

Impressive you can get that long out of pine even on a BK
It's 2.9 cubic feet.
I could get way longer but I needed this amount of BTU output (basement stove heating the whole home) to keep the upstairs good. It was 69 early this morning there. So I barely set the thermostat right :)

If I would have choked it more, I could get 24 hrs, but then the home would be too cold, defeating the purpose of the stove.

So I'd say, it's nice that the BK can change output rates in a good range, but it's impressive that I insulated and sealed the home such that I have enough BTUs in 2.8-ish cubic foot of pine to keep a 1700 sqft home around 70 and an 825 sqft basement around 80 for 12 hrs. :p

Last night's load went through the night. It's rare the dragon is satisfied with wood for 7hrs. Especially in these temps.
It's the oak that saved it all. The house was warm this morning with a good remaining coal bed. Loaded this morning with the usual hardwoods and off to work I went. Easy job, minus the cold.... it actually slowed me down a bit, and back home by 1:30.
Repeat load of this morning and sipping coffee as I'm catching up here.

I have so much ash and coals built up that even burning bark all day I'm not sure if I'll get any ash out before I need to burn a real load...🙄. We won't be over freezing for over another week yet, but at least it's not supposed to be quite so cold. If I can get caught up with getting the ash out I might be able to keep up with taking it out...

I can't wait to get home Friday and see how much room is in the stove. Last time it was about half available for wood and 6" of coals. The wife can feed it but controlling the coals, not so much.

@stoveliker 's idea of using the metal cat litter sifter is, the cat's ass. Pun intended.
Make a clear spot in the front corner of the stove. Scoop and sift ashes out in that corner. Flip coals to the back, wash, rinse, and repeat.
Scoop out the ash pile and spread coals for the normal tending.

That's what I also do, except I burn the embers out before removing the ash. I started this morning with about 8" of coal & ash but needed some heat, so I shoved as much as I could to one side and ripped a small shoulder season load. I've since burned 4 rounds of bark and I think I'm getting close to removing a little ash. With that much stuff in there it's hard to clear a corner to sift ash into...

I'm burning down some coals at the moment but my stomach is full, some soup I made on a cold day. The wife really liked it so it's a keeper.

Our outside temp at the moment is 7.3, the temp up here is 70 but some of that is from the cooking.

A well insulated home makes a world of difference. I was told my 1.6 Vista was too small for our home. I’m glad I did not go bigger. Heats the main floor and upstairs fine. Upgrading our windows and slider was a huge improvement for us.

Always love your soup pics! I made my venison chili yesterday in the cast iron Dutch oven. Family loves it!

I made some zuppa tuscana soup (like they have at Olive Garden) last night. Sorry, didn’t even think about taking pics. I made much more than needed so we also had it tonight and finished it up. Perfect soup weather. We had about a 1/2” of snow and upper 20s today. As of a half hour ago we’re down to 21 and the wind is back. I’m burning down some spruce I added around 2pm before putting in a full load of oak that’s already been staged by the stove for the last few hours. I plan on a medium level burn with the fans on medium as well. Lows should bottom out in the lower teens.

25 now, a low forecast of 19. The feels like low is forecast to be 0 F. So it's going to be windy.

70 upstairs after burning quite some pine today. Windy already. Got 1/2-3/4" of snow too.

A reload of proper white oak splits and red oak shorties on top (I didn't bring in enough white oak - the shorties made me forget how many splits I need to fill this box...).

Almost no coals left (pine... And forgetfulness). Nice and empty firebox though.
