5 ash & 2 beech tonight. Just got home to some decent coals from 5 shoulder season pieces with 1 ash from late this afternoon. Temperature is finally getting back down to the low 30's tonight. I hate upper 30's to low 40's overnight temperatures. Too cold to not have a fire, but so easy to get it too warm at bedtime.

Nevermind that RealFeel says 4C/40F outside

Because it was pretty cold yesterday day and night and it’s under 13C/ 55F inside the living room…Just fired up the dinky Délice with my typical Siberian Elm/White Oak/Chestnut splits top down kindled with oak/hazel/elm/poplar/apple twigs

I’m gettin ready to close the air intake to 50%

Before I cold started today, I pulled the deflector to investigate buildup in the flue…There’s a fair amount of soot and a little pile of creo flakes in the 90 elbow, so I will sweep next week…probably NYD

Last load last night was at 11pm. Light load in this morning around 7:30. GF was trying to get it going, and came out of the lair looking for me to help. I had just gotten up. Faint smell of smoke in the air. Used the bathroom then checked the dragon. By that time the flames were going okay. She has very little patience and had given up LOL. I closed the bypass and it was still drafting good. I added more splits. This furnace drafts well even with a subpar chimney and the bypass closed. As long as the chimney is heated up first. I do top down starts. She doesn't but, she tried. Happy with that.

2 more small loads throughout the day. Just to kill the dampness. Been wet and off/on rains yesterday and today. Hates the damp weather.
One overnight load going in later.

Got home last night from my wife's sides family Christmas and made a 3/4 load hardwood fire. This morning has a 3/4 shoulder season load in. Sunny, 31 degrees with a forecast high of 40.

My wife had the brilliant idea to bring our 4 youngest nieces ages 5-12 home with us for a sleepover and trip to the local wildlife sanctuary/zoo today. Our poor cats are NOT impressed... Nephew age 12 was dropped off this morning to come along too. They need to go outside and get some of the energy burned off. Unfortunately all the snow is gone so we can't go tubing down the back hill.

I only have 2 kids and my house is like that all the time, can’t imagine with 4!!

And add the 5th this morning who is a cousin that they only see intermittently and chaos ensues... It's a little bit of a shock to the system compared to being empty nesters for the last 11 months, but not completely new. We were foster parents and at one point had 6 kids in the house age 1, 3, 3, 5, 8 & 17. I forgot how LOUD they are!

I had each wait by the back door as my door helper for 1 load of wood when I hauled in. The 5 year old is a very excited helper 😂. She not only wanted to open and close the door but also unload the wheelbarrow AND take the other kids turns.

I never did an overnight load last night. House was still comfy. I prefer an overnight for coals as opposed to a cold start.....

Still no fire yet at mid day. Winds have been busy and temps are supposed to drop into the low 30s for an overnight. The dragon will be hungry this evening.

I finally started a fire around 11, the stove has some cherry, birch, maple and ash in it. After taking some ashes out, I took the rhino so I could clear some small branches that came down on the trails before the next snow or colder weather.

Just started mine at 1:30 after a good emptying of ash. Just enough coals left for a matchless fire. Added a little air via piece of copper pipe and my lungs, some splitter slag, and ash splits. Couple pieces of sugar too.

It was 57 here today...

Down to low to mid 30s tonight, put in a load of black cherry, red oak and some birch with pine kindling. Work day tomorrow and supposed to be warm any way, so no stove tomorrow and probably not New Year’s Day either. Another warm day. Cold to set in starting Thursday night to the 20s.
