14.5 hrs after last night's load, a reload with red oak shorties.

A low of 20 I believe early in the night.
This morning a bit of snow (<0.5"), 32 now. High forecast of 36. Upstairs it's 70 F.

I put the dragon on a diet this morning. She's only feeding on 5-6 splits of hardwood on top of a decent coal bed. Ash, sugar, and cherry.
Her ash pail has gained weight after the cold snap.

Interesting way of stacking shorties

lol. You should see my shed >>
I stacked them N/S in the back, had raked the coals to the front. More N/S did not fit, and E-W sucks, especially on bumpy coals and being in the front. So I put them like this. Leaning backwards.

Any which way that gets the most in is a good way imo :-)

A 20 mins later:

I do the same with some of my longer shorts. With a long firebox, I leave the back ''empty" save some coals. I stack 16''L splits, N/S, in the middle. In the front I stand up those shorts and lean into the splits. Air wash favors the coals, since the flue exits rear bottom of stove.
All burns nicely this way. From the bottom up.

3/4 mixed load of hardwood and softwood to get up to cruising quickly before going out hunting this morning. Back in already and may just call it quits for the season. We'll see if my stubborn inability to give up kicks back in this afternoon if I can get my chores done or before the season ends.
I know how you feel. I missed going to Maine this year because of a potential health issue that ended up well. Had to shorten my Mass deer hunting trip due to family commitments. There are only so many hunting seasons in a lifetime so I try to make the best out of them.

What's in my stove right now?
Northern lights. Not as blue as my phone makes it look like, but quite blue nonetheless.

Oak and cherry tonight. Will be low/medium burn with no fan. Low around 20. Cherry does not frequent my stacks often so I appreciate it when it does.

Cherry is awesome. Smells great. Not the greatest heat, but dries on the quicker side and is beautiful for smoking meats.
Me loves cherry smoked bacon.
Enjoy your fire and take a sniff or two. ;)

23 going down to 19 tonight. Firing up the coals and looking at the rack. Looks like mostly ash tonight with 1 oak and a beech or two. Nice steady inside temps today with mild temperatures, light winds and two 3/4 combination fires.

35 outside, going down to 27.
72 upstairs. The load wasnt done; significant fuel left in the back. But some folks in my household will be up early tomorrow, so I need to go to bed.
Awkward reload with a 12" maple split, and 5 oak shorties. Hope I'll make it to the morning with this.

See you again at a Merry Christmas for all!

I was reading up on the BK offerings and tech, very impressive...

The Dragon got some nice hardwoods in the wee hours. She kept us warm while we slept. A bit chilly in the am, 14 splits of soft maples and river birch with air half open. Warming nicely.

Merry Christmas to you all.

Wife and I Slept in. Teenagers don’t get up for Christmas at the crack of dawn anymore. Stove full of oak, maple cherry and ash. Merry Christmas 🎁 🎄 fellow burners!

Was out yesterday afternoon at family’s house. Loaded the stove around 130-145 yesterday afternoon with beech, ash and hickory. Took a break from the stove last night as Santa needed to come down the chimney without burning his butt. Still had hot coals at 9 am this morning. This stove holds coals very well. The beech also coals very nicely. Big chunks that stay hot for a very long time. Reloaded with hickory and beech today. We’ll be out for the afternoon. Merry Christmas everyone.

A total of 3 same sized silver loads today. Kept house warm with temps in mid 20s today. Just switched to hardwoods since the girl and I are headed out for a few hours. Couple days ago we picked up a friends autistic son so they could share Christmas. This evening we're bringing him back. About 5.5krs total driving.

See you gents after.
I hope you all enjoyed your Christmas day.

Around 3 pm I added two oak shorties and a locust ugly; last night's load lasted longer than I had expected - but it was 34 out (not 20s), and some cooking was happening.
I also took out some ashes at the time.
A 16 hrs or so even though the load was not really full.

Now I raked all coals to the front and reloaded with red oak shorties. 30 F outside, going down to 24. 72 upstairs.
To illustrate my load: n/s in the back, and vertical in front, leaning backwards.
