Neat, this is handy info. Is that with 6ft of outdoor exposure to the class A?

Pretty close. I have three pieces of Class A. One and a half’ish in the attic, and one and a half’ish outside. I’ll take better notes when I’m up there again.

It's similar to our setup. Looks like the chimney pipe needs a brace at the 5ft level.

Yes, one is required at 5' above the exit point from the roof. You'll be glad you have one with the next big windstorm.

I’ll get one. That’s easy.

Any other details someone might want in recording temp loss from top to bottom? It was nearly 60 out the day I did the first test. I’d like to test it in colder temps if we get any. It’s fun to talk of global warming, when just last year we had single digits, which are uncommon here.

The outdoor temp is important. A 30º test would be more meaningful.

Local weather is not climate, just like the very warm winter we are haing is not. Global temps are on the rise for sure, but this year we are dealing with a very strong el Nino on the west coast.

Looks like there is a $60 off brand or $120-$150 name brand. Any reason not to go for the $60 one other than if I get to put holes in my brand new shingles, may as well only do it once.

We have the DuraTech bracket 6DT-XRS. It's been up there for 18 yrs and doing fine. It looks the same as the Selkirk bracket. I don't know anything about the Chinese bracket. It could be ok too. The main thing is to install it properly, the reviews say the instructions with the Chinese version are awful. If so, use the DuraTech or Selkirk instructions. If you want to get the Selkirk bracket, that looks like a decent price.

31 degrees
Yall should feel privileged to have me on the roof at 11:00. 😂😭😂🥶
Put the thermometer back up, push the ashes to the back and rake the coals up front one time, and loaded the stove.
One good size hickory and one slim oak split.

She really didn’t even ask when I put my coat on.
Wife: Where you going?
Me: To measure the chimney temperature.
Her: Quietly just took another bite of her cereal.
Me: Walked outside as if nothing happened.

Not sure how much i have left in me tonight. I hear it ticking faster as if that hickory is getting ready to heat up though. I did screen shots to show the photo time stamp.

Tossed another on about 445, took a few minutes to catch, but it’s trying now.

Close to 120 difference now that it’s rising. The hotter it is, the greater the gap, it may warm the insulation and narrow the difference in time?🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Hanging out around 85 degrees different at the moment as the mass of the pipe heats and the off gassing settles down. It’s still moving towards equalizing. The Auber has settled in steady for a little bit slowly dropping one degree at a time, and the probe at the cap is climbing by the tenths, but climbing.
81.2 at time of photo.

The bottom temp is the outdoor temp. 25*F

Good stuff! I’m surprised the exhaust temps are that high. I’ve often wondered what mine are but there’s no way I’m going up on my 10/12 pitch metal roof in January! Should be little to no creosote forming up there.

I have a little on the cap, but I do a lot of letting it die off then restarting when the house starts to cool down. I suspect I spend a lot of time in the 275-400 flue temp. That would have me frequently in the 250-320 range at the cap. Now, let winter hit for real and it will run harder.

Getting ready to run the kids to school.
Still about 70*F.

Seems like I got all I’m gonna get out of this test. Kinda beating a dead horse now. Maybe if I’m running real hard I’ll try again , but you might see 200 degree difference if the flue is running around 700, until the pipe warms up some more.

Last shot of the day. It was fun.

I just ran up on the roof top click, click, click,
To sweep the chimney very quick.
The brush went down the chimney squeak, screech, scream,
And now my chimney is crystal clean.

I also took down the other thermometer that I had put to monitor the temps at the cap. It was still holding the same average differences for about a week.

This is just the draft sucking soot up the chimney. Stove is cold, cold right now, and house is in the 60s. I took the damper section out and played the phone on the flue collar of the stove looking up.

9:10PM
Beast of a log.
200 flue.

9:20PM
466 flue
