Well the temps are warmer now so stove-gate can chill for a bit. I'm thinking of getting more wood next week myself. Shoulder acting up but whatever. First think is I need to expand my storage area I have nowhere to put it.
I’m going to check the CO meter in the morning when I get home and continue to monitor it for any activity especially when not using stove. If it continues to get low level readings in history I’m going to shut the boiler down and use the heat pump and stove.

Keep a record of those readings.

Same. I think I did some permanent damage 12 years ago, with over-doing it on the hand splitting (maul), as it really flares up when I work it hard anymore. Shoveling a few hundred feet of sidewalk on Friday had it a little tender, then splitting wood Saturday and Sunday ensured it only got worse.

But I wasn't going to miss out on our one good weekend of frozen ground, as it's been too warm and muddy to do much splitting this winter. Feeling it today.
I just spoke to my tree guy and ordered 2 cords shoulder be damned. Should be here sometime next week. He works at his own pace and is always late but the price is right, quality is good, and he does show up eventually so I can't complain.

I injured my left shoulder in a skiing accident and developed gnarly tendonitis in the right over compensating for 2 years. Now if I over do it that flares up. Hoping just some ibuprofen and rest will clear it up. Needed a cortisone shot last year. 😡

Dude got to protect the shoulder. It's the longest rehab recovery of any of the main sports injury joints. I know u know that, but a stupid day or 2 or even 1 bad movement will set you weeks, months back. The reinjury on shoulders during recovery is so freakin high.

Tell me about it. I was a tennis player my whole life. All as a kid, scholarship in college, and did adult leagues and tournaments until about 32. My right shoulder isn't like specifically messed up but it's shot. And then I over used the crap out of it when my left was broken skiing. So now I have two bad wings!

It took me about 1 year of rest and hard rehab to get back to 90% range with my left. Then I had to have surgery on it and spent another 6 months rehabbing to get that 90% back. Was hard work. Right paid the price as I mentioned. Multiple cortisone shots later both are in a good spot until I overdo it one day. I just have to be careful.

My wife was an athlete and she's very sturdy. Tiny little thing but never injured. She never quite sympathized with my shoulder issues and gives me the "work through it" look lol. She's a nice woman just has no time for injury. She's gotten better since that skiing accident. But still thinks I'm a baby. Even tho I could show you doke crazy x-rays 🤣.

Anyways. I'm hyper for a log delivery! I asked for a cherry log of he has it. I'm burning the last of my cherry and I'm sad about it. It'll be almost exclusively red oak the next 2-3 years with a little maple and ash mixed in. I hope he has one but it's really luck of the draw. I'll likely end up with more red oak and maple. Truly a first world problem.

I was tennis player also but not for school, that's how i jacked my shoulder years ago. 9 months to recover from an average injury (not a really bad one).
Now i'm almost all Paddle tennis and starting Padel too.

The shoulder is almost like the back. If you feel a tweek stop immediately, just stupid not to. It's not a work thru the pain type injury at all. Those are muscle cramps, sore muscle type soft injuries.

What school did u play for?

Getting nervous you’re going to run out? Lol just make that new splitter do the work for you.

20 years of bombing it 125 down the middle will do a number on the shoulder lol. I played for Rochester, was a d2 schedule at the time. I was good enough to probably be on the bench in d1 but wanted to play and the education was not important to me. I ended to transferring back to Boston for pharmacy school afterwards. I haven't gotten into pickle or paddle yet. I switched over to golf and I'm really happy with that for now. Maybe one day.

No lol I'm just an addict...hat's why I hang out here! Seriously though, you can never have enough. I have the space and I prefer to process wood in the winter. I don't like being hot, there's no mud, and splitting is easier in the cold. It usually takes my tree guy 1-2 weeks to show up which will give me about 2 weeks to get it all done before sugar season. Then we're going away in early March. So id just like to get it all done before then.

Pickle sucks.
Paddle and Padel are awesome. If you were down here i'd recruit you for our state team.
I think our new young guy (25) played at Rochester too.

I'll be on the course with Matt escaping life with a beer. You guys have fun we'll root for you lol.

You can drink beer when playing paddle. It's almost encouraged.
I play with lots of former college tennis heavy hitters.
The nature of the game lets hack tennis guys like me to be able to compete and sometime beat D1 tennis guys who later switched to paddle.

Didn’t you already get your 4 cords for the year? Or did you just get another 2

I only got one delivery/2 cords so far this year. Gotta get 4 cords to stay on pace! Though last year I only used 3 and we're on that kind of pace again this year. I wouldn't mind getting 6 cords this year but I'll run out of time. Maybe next year.

I’m going to keep an eye out for some more. Don’t know if I need another 2-2.5 cords quite yet though…

For some reason I thought that last load you got was 4 cord but I was delusional

Wood porn does things to a man. It's ok. We've all been there. 😉

I did get a 5 cord delivery one time. It was wayyyy too much at once. I really like the 2 cord deliveries, I can power through them in a week. This was from my first year when I processed 10+ cords. I have a big driveway:

Hah... you just reminded me that the shoulder that's bothering me now, was broken when I was about 24 years old. Broke my scapula and three ribs falling down a flight of stairs, learning that socks on slippery hardwood while carrying a squirming dog is a bad combination. I'm not sure if that's contributing to the tenderness experienced now after shoveling, and then splitting wood, but it's possible. I actually have a list of a few shoulder injuries, but won't bore you with all that.

Wood porn? I bucked and split two cords this weekend, all efforts to do more being hampered by a fresh 8" of snow on everything, and other chores that blocked out part of each day. Right now, most of what I'm splitting is ash and relatively small stuff, like 8" to 18", the stuff you can really fly through.

Here's the quick run-down on the process:

1. Haul logs home in trailer

2. Store logs in piles by year

3. Roll a log off the pile, buck to 18" lengths

4. Load rounds into bucket

5. Park splitter where you'll be stacking.

6. Park bucket at hip height next to splitter

7. Split and repeat, until it gets dark.

Yup bigger saw for sure. Time is money when you get loads like that.

Oh yeah. I'm not getting that much again unless I got a bigger saw and had some help. There's no need. It was helpful that first year but overkill now.

Sorry, was trying to keep it short, so left out some details. If a log is under 1500 lb., I can usually lift it out of the trailer from the side with my tractor. If over 2000 lb., then I drag it off the back of the trailer with the tractor. The heaviest single log I can carry is 5000 lb., as it's only a 7000 lb. GTWR trailer with a curb weight near 2000 lb, but strapping down a single big stick in a wide trailer gets a little hairy.

Ashful is doing industrial firewood processing. I love it and would do it if I had that kind of land time, or money for the equipment. Im just a guy in his driveway with a chainsaw, axe, and splitter though! Lol

Ha yeah, "The Gentleman Wood Processor".
But even though not many of us have the equipment or space or need for that much, it's great to fully see his dialed in process and get us to think about how we can optimize our own work flow situations.

Thanks Ash for those good pics and details.
