Have you checked the moisture content in your wood? Usually this is a sign it is a bit wet, and yes could be doing the same in your chimney.

I dont have the tool to check the moisture content. I'll check on amazon. Any recommendations? You ever use any of the fake logs that are supposed to help remove creosote? Do they work?

I don't recommend them, people use them but if you have to use them then your wood is suspect and you need to be sweeping your chimney more.

The Harbor Freight one seems to be fine. A lot of members here like the General brand, available from Lowes and (I think) Home Depot. Otherwise if you don't mind waiting mail order, there are plenty available through eBay or Amazon. Just look for a two-pin type.

I'd advise getting one locally asap. Sounds like you may have a problem with moisture content and there is no one single more important factor in burning with your stove. To learn more about it, do a search on this forum for "moisture content", but you want to shoot for 20-25% on freshly split face. These epa stoves are designed to operate best at about 20% and it's uber important.

As for the creosote products, what they do is loosen bad (hard or gooey) creosote so that it's easier to sweep. They are no substitute for a cleaning. You'll want to determine if you have a problem first with an inspection.

I'll get the tool and check. I'm not concerned about the oak or ash - those have not left any buildup. Actually when I loaded it up with ash 2 nights ago the glass cleaned up. Thanks for the feedback.
