Wind causing back puffing?

A wind defeating chimney cap is likely the best next step if the added length of chimney doesn't help. I have definitely seen a cap change make a difference... including in a situation similar to the one you describe - mild day, with blustery winds from (maybe) a different compass point than usual.

Be sure to report back on the effect of the added chimney section...

as I mentioned before, the reason I didint go qwith another 3-4 ft of chimney, was it would have been a p ain in my butt to weld it to my existing chimney....the vaccu stack was a much easioer and faster soultion..and im glad i did it ....

So basically you only have single wall from the stove to the very top outside?

yes....3/16" steel chimney...non insuklated...single wall..

out in my area, many people do it this way...

and although my chimney doesnt ever get hot...my draft is very strong ...

I am waiting for the bf to come home, cause I really do think that the chimney cap might be clogged. After he cleans it we will test, and if it's still back puffing then buy the length.

keep in mind that im burning fully aged wood..some of it 7 year old or more...

thats got to help keep down on any creostoe problems

Bf came home looked at the cap, said it wasn't clogged. Started a fire, and it went fine. It was just the severe wind that caused it to back puff. The wind was really bad, there was a wind warning for the area. Stove is heating away right now. Gonna clean tomorrow
