What WON'T you burn?

Yeah my mom and I try to sit him down and tell him to only burn wood. He just gets pissed. I mean he's getting free wood (mainly from me cutting his property), and I clean his damn chimney and he still insists on burning all that crap. I don't understand. I guess it's just stubborness. Drives me crazy!

try and explain it to my father in law. the man burns asphault shingles that smolder for days the man scares me.

Wow. Considering what that does to the atmosphere I wonder how much that negates or cancels out the positive impacts that all the EPA stoves of today. IOW how many smoke dragon to EPA stove conversions would it take to make up for what one person is doing to the environment with burning shingles? It makes me not feel so bad about burning my old smoke dragon.

All summer I collect branches from my yard and from parks I visit with my children. I keep one of those pocket chainsaws in the bike burley and come home with a full load. To make the sticks easier to throw into the stove, I roll them in newspaper and tape it tight. There is also a wood shop that saves me about a trunk full per week of scrap. It's mid November and I am only burning splits for overnight heat.

CowboyAndy, I think you're father-in-law has got my stepdad beat. He wouldn't burn shingles. Milk cartons with plastic caps, mystery fiberboard ceiling tiles, but not asphalt shingles. Another thing - he never cleans the ashes out. I'll come over on football Sunday and the stove has more ashes than room for wood. It still draws great though.

Trust me, it makes me very aggrivated. My wife and I try our best to live "green" (of course we have been doing this long before it became the cool thing to do), and it just seems like everything we do is negated by him. It sucks. He is in the process of having wind turbines put on his property as part of a new wind farm here. Turns out hes not doing it because of alternative energy, the enviornment or anything like that. He is getting 11 grand a pop. He sees "green" alright...

I would say Railroad ties and telephone poles, but there's a big stack of them that the railroad carelessly put in my line of sight. I mean how bad could they be? It's not like I'm not venting to a chimney! Ok, just kidding. Please don't email me to tell me how awful it would be for me to cut these up and burn them.

Cowboy Andy, Oh well at least the wind farm will do the environment a lot of good in the end even if he does financially benefit.

And as far as you living green and him not caring. At least you are a lot environmentally SMAHHHHter than he, as they say around here. Its not all negated by him because there are probably a lot more smart people in the country like yourself than there are people like him. At least I like to think so.

Thats funny, I saw an ad for some little logs that look like 20, 50 and 100 dollar bills. My son didnt realize they were fake and said "why would someone burn money??? If they don't want it, they can send it to me!"

only thing that gets burned in my oslo is seasoned wood from trees, and split framing lumber for kindling. Oh, and newspaper for firin' it up.

no paint, no chicken bones, no dog poop, no poisons, no caustic chemicals, no table scraps, no clothing, no rubber, no nothin' else but good firewood goes into the jotul.

Now, outside, in the fire pit, I'll burn anything but tires, yep, that pretty well covers it, no tires.

Old magazines placed on a good hot bed of coals exploded into a huge mass of black flaky ash that was near impossible to get rid of. Try explaining THAT one to your wife!

As long as we're flaming on other's burning practices, my FIL burns painted wood scraps that have been removed from rental properties because they have lead in them. I have expressed my concerns, but he seems to think it's okay because it's an open fireplace... :roll:

My sister went camping and had some site neighbors that brought their own pressure treated firewood. She said the dude was standing in the smoke stream and deep inhaling the smoke with satisfaction. Fortunately, the fire was downwind...
