What to do with big pile of scraps?

Finished up this morning. Just over two hours tossing the remaining larger pieces toward the end of a stack and the small ones into boxes. Only a little over one wheelbarrow full of chips to coarse for garden I dumped into the woods. I measured the stacks and found that, counting the small volume in the boxes, I've got right around 2 cords. Glad that I'm getting an extra half cord. Compensation for the hassle as I see it.

I never see putting up firewood as a hassle - I like being outside and cutting, splitting, stacking or simply tidying things up. Good relaxation and I always look forward to the next time I'm able to allot a half-day to firewood tasks. I need to figure out how to spend less time doing business/bills.

I just received the half cord promised to me as compensation for the excess amount of small wood shards in the first load. Looks like a generous half cord. The driver says the company uses a splitter that impact the wood with 6 prongs, regardless of diameter. So basically a small round of ~12" gets sheared into small chunks. I'll probably look elsewhere next year. But I'm fairly pleased to have gotten well over 2.5 cords for $350.

I would keep that company in your rolodex, they seem to have made a quick good turn around to make things right, a lot of those small pieces are actually nice pieces because they will dry out fast and there really not that small, ideally I understand you want uniformed larger splits, but this company seems like they care and this isn't a nightmare like some other members have experienced with different wood suppliers. Just my two cents.

Yes I may go back to them next year if needed. Wood is well seasoned too. Should be good to go by November.

I wouldnt not use them... They not only gave you an amazing price, you were displeased and they went above and beyond to make it right... Thats a good company to do business with, and its becoming extremely rare to receive that level of service.

+1 on above, at the end of the day you are describing a top tier vendor in my area. They returned your phone call and made it right.

Here, I would save every last little piece. Dandy fire starters when you get
down to the small stuff. I use bunches of 'splitter trash' every winter. Does
sound like your firewood supplier is a keeper IMO...

"Shoulder season" when you don't want to burn your primo wood. I'm doing the same with short cuts and uglies.

That's a pile of kindling, great for shoulder season when I'm not burning 24/7 and have to start fires at least once a day. I also use it for the smoker - depending on what type of wood it is of course.

I made a big pile of cherry, crab apple and peach scraps yesterday. You better believe those are going in the smoker pile

If you have a still you could distill wood alcohol. Just don't drink it. Good for rubdowns and grease removal.
