cold this morning. Upper teens with single digit wind chills. Had very nice coal bed from last night, reloaded with red oak and maple again.

Debating to split some more wood later depending on the temperature.

Im riding out some coals of last nights load. I had restocked the racks yesterday and had some hardwood shorties kicked off to the side so I arranged those the best I could for overnight. I never do that great with short or odd shape pieces, definitely not photo worthy 😉I think I will be adding some spruce in maybe an hour once these coals finish doing their thing. High today is just below freezing with a light breeze. 👍🏼

So I never did a spruce load as last nights coals carried pretty well through the day with temps at 31 but full sun. House at 71. Also I quoted my previous post since I said uglies and shorties never seem to allow me to pack a nice box but sometimes the stars align and things fall into place. I have a nice load in for the night of cherry, oak and maple.

Last nights coals

Tonight’s shorties and a Y shape ugly in the mix, behind that curtain of oak there’s a lot of wood;

I had added 4 short splits at around noon (18 hrs).
Time now for a reload of oak. Most splits a bit short still, 14" instead of 17.5

28 outside now, but slowly warming up to 41 tomorrow morning. 71 upstairs.

Stove went cold today. First cold start since mid December. Hit 54 for a high with sun, so the morning shoulder season load was excessive. Fired up the little bit of charcoal a while ago with some kindling and trying to get a 3/4 load of hardwood going. 3 ash, 2 beech and 1 sugar maple.

3/4 load of 8-10 small and medium pieces, mostly ash with a couple of beech. Going up to around 40 today.

Side note. Pulled the magnet off that was partially blocking the secondary air because I've been ending up with dirty glass with the warmer weather and smaller loads. Maybe I should have left the damper more open and run some loads that way first, but I decided to go back to stock and try charring more and closing the damper faster. Weather gets colder again next week, so we'll see what happens then.

I took some ashes out at 4, added some bark to the remaining coals, and three 10" shorties plus an ugly of oak

A reload with some knotty pieces and a lot of free space. All white oak. 41 and foggy outside, going down to 34. 71 upstairs.

Red oak and maple for the night. Down to 31 tonight, which will be the high for the day tomorrow morning. Going to get very cold and windy with close to single digit lows tomorrow night without wind. Going to try to keep the house “preheated” as best as possible with more or less a full stove tonight.

We didn't have an overnight fire last night. The outside temp this morning was 2, the first load has maple with some beech in it.

Accu is calling for minus 11 tomorrow morning with a wind chill of minus 25, that'll be nice.

Ironwood time?

That'll help out some but temps that cold, I'll just set the furnace at 62. Usually with the pellet stove, I would fill the basement with heat and then start up the overnight fire with the wood stove later, the two together with the colder temps worked out good but we didn't buy any pellets this year. We had planned on running the furnace this year since all rooms get the heat.
