Ash Ash and more Ash. High today was around 2 degrees and in the negatives last night. It feels right, like it should be. Draft is pulling straight up and with no wind Im sending a smoke column straight up to the clouds. I have about 1/3 of my radiators on and the secondary thermostat going to keep the further spaces of the house from freezing. Now its time to tie up some rods and watch for the lake ice.

A split of pine on the oak and cherry coals from earlier today. I did reload a 65% load early this morning. A second split going on soon

Edit, video, Door is 480 (where else to measure I don't know), the max on the convection top was 430, flue 450, cat 2 pm, thermostat wide open

Wow this last load is kickin butt. 1st time i've ever heard my wife say "it's to hot in here".
STT 615F on just secondaries alone, Secondaries are not even going that crazy, just normal ish, but with draft almost shut which is further closed than normal.

Must have hit some more prime pieces. Also these colder temps are probably boosting the draft a bit. It's 20F out and dropping.

10" floor fan has been blowing around the stove since it was loaded an hour and 20 minutes ago.

-4 but the wind has given a brief reprieve. Small shoulder season load of small size stuff for a quick burst. I did succeed in getting the coals under control earlier but less successful keeping the house warm. Downstairs I maintained between 73 & 77, but couldn't get upstairs over 68 even with the sun helping. Down to 66 upstairs after cooking dinner. We'll see if bark is required to get more in later than I was able to last night. Forecast low of -13 with -34 wind chill, but today's temperature never got as high as it was supposed to so I expect we might end up a little lower in the morning. Still considering an alarm for a reload overnight.

Nice job
With the bedroom above the lair, I walked in to see the GF half naked with the covers down by the foot of the bed. She was sound asleep. In my mind I hear the lyrics, "It's getting hot in here. Take off all your clothes."
LOL

Been burning straight for over 24 hours. Burning down coals with bark now. STT 400. Small firebox at 1.6 so want to pack it before bed. Don’t think I’ll get up at 3am since I’m beat from snow cleanup and cutting brush today. Will be 9 or 10 tomorrow am so cold start in the morning. NG furnace will kick on at 64. House is 76 now with outside temp 17.

T’was a balmy -19f this morning and the boiler went from 10pm-8am with a full load of ash and around 200lbs of soft coal. This morning I tossed around 100lbs of coal in and filled it half full with crappy stuff. I had to load it half full every 4hrs. When it’s this cold I turn the in floor temps up 4-5f so they run almost nonstop pumping heat into the concrete. That way they turn into giant heat sinks that warm up during the day and don’t call for heat for a while at night when I turn the thermostats back down to normal. Last night there wasn’t a heat call until 2am in the house and around 1am in the shop. I figure I’m home so I may as well throw wood in during the day while I’m here instead of getting up at 5am to check it.

Coal smells sooooooo good when it’s doing its thing 😏

I grew up with a coal stove. Use to help my dad shovel it from the coal bin. Boy did it heat our home in the 70’s! Remember sleeping near it with my Black Lab. Our dog loved it.

Tetris of red and white oak, and locust.

20 outside, a low forecast of 15 but with a real feel of -1.
Upstairs is 71

And the video is at the overnight air setting.

I pushed almost all the coals to the back of the dragon's throat. It's breath hissed in delight. A preemptive load of the overnight's fill. All mixed hardwoods of the season's variety. Ash, sugar, B cherry, apple, and couple splits of red maple. A good sized load for a healthy appetizer to turn to coals. Aim's to create a massive coal bed like those of recent past. Level those out later, pushing them back and pulling some forward to try a different tactic for the overnight feast. Red oak, W oak, sugar, B & H locusts, and possibly a bit of hickory. Some of both oak species will be petrified limb wood. Loves that stuff. Should I throw a split of black in for the cherry on top? B cherry that is.

Well, only 6 pieces again tonight, but not from lack of room... Monster chunks! 3 beech, 1 sugar maple and 2 ironwood. 2 are 5-6" rounds, so it should last awhile; just hoping it can maintain temperature until whenever I set the alarm for. Currently -6 and the wind hasn't picked up real bad yet.

Our overnight temps will be 4* and currently 8* with a real feel of -5.
The feast will go in around 11:30-12. Going to sit back and watch a bit of TV.
See you cats in the am when the coffee is on. Night all.

-13 with -30 wind chill. Alarm didn't go off at 4 so there's no huge pile of coals, but the heaters are kicking on. Full load of ash in.

@Todd... What's the wind chill -50 or so?
Local weatherman’s saying -40’s. Calling for a warm up tomorrow around 20. It’s going to feel more like 50 after this!

Wife’s Last nights load of oak and maple went well, stat at 2:00 fans on low. Went into the overnight at 75 and ended up at 67 this am. 1 degree out overnight. I had lots of coals left on my arrival home from work so I raked them forward and laid down 2 sleepers in the back of the stove e/w then a full load of spruce n/s on top of those. I had some room left from somewhat short cut splits so I threw a couple in front of those. Coffee #2 is on and so is the king. Highs in the teens today and cloudy. See you guys for tonight’s reports. ☕️👍🏼

-24f this morning. A bit chilly. When it’s this cold the boiler will chew through the better part of an IBC tote of mixed wood. It’s heating close to 10k square feet so I’m quite okay with it. Threw in a full load of ash and around 200lbs of coal at 9pm and it was ready to load again at 6am.

Supposed to warm up to a blistering 7f ABOVE this afternoon. Gonna feel like spring !!

I saw your earlier report and was amazed you went through so much coal and wood in one night. Now I see your report of what you’re actually heating. Wow! That’s probably a record on here. Do you have a warehouse or what? 👀

House is 2,500sq/ft with a 1,200sq/ft garage. Farm shop is 54x72x18 and its heat load gets figured at 1.5x being so tall. Pump house is 8x16 but only kept at 45f.

Main Shop is kept at 62f most of the time, shop office/kitchen is kept at 67f, and the house is at 71f because Mama Bear has thin skin.

Single digits this morning with wind chills right below 0. Wife kept the stove going for a while yesterday I was surprised! No overnight load though. Came home and sifted some ash out and was surprised I still had good coals to get a fire going with no help. Loaded up with ash, oak and cherry this morning.
