Filled my emergency wood rack under the deck near my walkout basement door today. I use this wood during storms. It holds just over a 1/3 cord at 9 feet long. Used 2/3 of a cord so far this season. 40’s and rain now so no fire. Using up the first 35lb box of LL Bean Fatwood which will get me well into February. Good stuff since 3rd season with the first box. I use just one piece and a pinecone from my property with some lumber scraps for my cold starts.
I’ve used probably a cord, cord and a half so far! Less than me!

Real cold days I’m around 30 splits per day. Milder days probably around 18-20

Split of oak and a split of ash to hold me over for a few hours. Ash certainly does not last like oak. Burns very hot though

That cold heading our way too! Not quite real feel of -19 though . Stay warm!
Unfortunately tonight is not the coldest night coming... Tomorrow and Monday night are supposed to reach -30 real feel. Central Northern WI is supposed to be almost -25 actual, -40 real feel Monday night. @Todd in NW WI will probably see -30 actual and -45 real feel. 🤮

-9F here currently, -20s for windchill. Supposed to be negative teens for highs Sunday and Monday with -40s for windchills. Two small fires at 7a and 2p throughout the day burning oak. Few smaller splits and a couple larger on top. Just loaded oak 3/4 at 730p to get us to the morning. House is nice and toasty at 75. Cruising around 900 right now with the blower on and air almost fully closed (little high for my liking). Love wood heat. Love my PE Super.

3/4 ish load of all ash tonight. This one was a bit more controllable. Still had to put the blower in max and air was all the way down by 350-400 STT. Got up to about 725 STT for a bit but then settled around 700 and I was able to turn the blower down to medium or so.

I guess ash just burns very hot in this stove.

All ash loads are something I have to watch closely until they settle in too. Ash releases it's BTU's quickly.
Certainly learned that! My first season burning ash. I was almost all oak and black cherry previous season. Both burn very different than ash. Every species burns a little different I have found out, including hickory and beech

Yeah there is a lot going on burning wood. All the different mixes of woods makes every burn different.
Even just burning oak, there still are differences in burning with sizes and shape differences, knots or clear, Air gap sizes etc.
Keeps it interesting

Anyway load up all...... the cold is coming. Pre warm your houses to fight this nasty cold coming to the North East.

32 this morning and not warming up today. Stove is all cleaned and started a pine limb fire. Time to warm everything up. Got a winter storm warning now till tomorrow morning. 3-5 with 8-10 1000 feet higher than us. Looks like it's running the ridge from us on up into the smokies so shouldn't affect me loadng out in the morning, I hope.

Stay warm y'all.

-22 with the stove loaded with Oak! Doesn’t look like we will get above 0 for the next few days. When it’s this cold I like to keep the stove hot so instead of burning full loads I like half loads at a medium low setting about every 4-5 hours then I’ll do a full load before bed with the air completely shut down.

Slept too long, house is cold (60-62 everywhere). Now I get to fight to get it warm 🙄. -4 with -14 wind chill. Ripping a pretty full load of shoulder season wood right now as hot as I comfortably can so I can get a full load of ash in and settled before leaving for Church.

I was looking at next-week's forecast. Oof! Lots of 3F - 4F degree mornings coming up, which isn't super common here near Philly, and I think our high for all of next week is something like 17F. Given the dynamics of my house, and the way I've been ripping thru 5 loads per day at temperatures 15F warmer, I could go thru some serious wood next week if I actually try to keep atop that on a mostly-wood diet.

In reality, I think the boiler will be running a lot more. There are limits to my ambition, in this area.
And that’s not even counting windchill which will push it below 0!

That's a cold one, the wind chills are even worse, stay warm.

Temps were in the 20's this morning. I woke up and checked the firebox of my All Nighter Moe, which I found still had some coals from last nights overnight burn. I tossed in a few pieces of pine to get it started up again, shortly followed by a link or two of cherry which coal up real nice, and topped off with some ash splits to last a few hours.

I vary my wood types by time of day, outside/inside temps, and length of burn. What is in your stove right now?
Siberian elm (dried for 3 years), box elder and ash

Close off that newly opened floor for the week?

Was still 72 when I woke up this morning. So waited until 9 and put in 2 big ash ugly knots in (first pic). That lasted until about now, which then I put in an oak ugly along with a smaller split of oak and a couple pieces of ash . Going to a hockey game for 3 so we’ll reload when we get home. Should be fine until then still 72-73 inside.
