I put some newspaper in and send a blast or two up as I’m starting the fire
that will not work for me...that newspaper smoke will just come out the door...newspaper don't burn too well here in France, neither IME

Yes torch will also work for me but since I have an outlet near the stove, easy to use a hairdryer. Lighting newspaper and holding it near the flue never worked for me. Just lots of smoke.
me too...it's good you have access close by...mine is outside

I just cold started started a fire...14C in the living room is far too chilly

...and it's chucking it down with rain...I got lucky and preheated in a light rainfall moment
Looks like:…hmmm, I’m not currently allowed to upload…but can attach

Ash and elm with apple starter

Let the stove go out this afternoon since house got to 75. Started it back up outside temp 29. Loaded with smaller splits and small chunks. Hottest fire of the season for me with STT 700. House 73 now.

Another load of red oak shorties.

Tomorrow the stove will go cold. Possibly until Thursday night (because Thursday am going to have some work done in the basement, and I guess they won't like it if it's 85 F there....

I didn't have an overnight fire last night, I set the furnace again. The wife said this mornings temp was 30, I shut the furnace off and the Liberty has a load of cherry in it.

The body temp has been back to normal, haven't taken it today but that will happen. The old Vicks VapoRub on the chest with a hot wash cloth over it has helped out, I always hated it but it works.

Checked on the furnace around 1:30 am. The air intake had managed to become completely closed on a load of splits. Didn't notice until I opened the door. Heavy smoke billowed out and the firebox was black. Dry black but not creosol. Coals were still glowing but there were a couple charcoaled splits. This tells me if I hook up the house thermostat the furnace will operate well with dry wood. I let the coals breath a bit and the 2 splits burst into flame. Added more splits and went back to sleep.

This morning firebox is back to normal color. Added ash, maple, and cherry splits. House is back up to temp.
I've been weary of hooking up the house thermometer. Draft isn't always the greatest. Almost 30' of masonry exterior chimney with SS liner. Trouble is there's 5' of horizontal pipe with 2 elbows before it exits the foundation. For my cold starts, and inducing draft, I do a top down with plenty of kindlin to induce heat. I leave the door almost closed and wait about 10min for a strong draft. Once it's going and maintained there are no drafting issues if I do my part with good fuel. I don't even need to open the bypass.

Small overnight burn last night. First night in over a week where the overnight low was out of the 20s. Woke up to a cold box this morning. Gave me the opportunity to shovel out some ash and wipe the glass.

Loaded it with some chestnut for a cold start today.

We are in a short warm spell right now before it goes back down to the teens later this week.

Yahoo sez 6C/ 42.8F
But RealFeel is -3C/ 26.6F

LR was just under 15C/ 59F

Stormy wet and howling winds

Lit up a top down of usual elm/oak/ash with apple twigs at about 1600. Certainly an improvement!

I wanted to let the stove go cold, but thought it was a good idea to clean the firebox from the creosote, so I put 5 medium to small pine splits in there, 3 n/s, 2 on top e/w, around 11.30 am.
Those are done now (cat more or less falling out of the active range).

I have a thermometer hanging above the stove to measure what happens before the new drop ceiling goes in later this week.

It registered 117.5 F. 🥺🥵

Who said BKs can't burn hot ...

Time for the homemade Chicken soup my friend!

40’s today so stuck with the mini split off and on today to take the chill off. Probably won’t use stove until end of week. 62 Wednesday.

I did have a few Bouillon Cubes in a big coffee cup with boiling water for about three days straight (twice a day) that really did wonders for my throat which was the worst it has been since 2020.

I think the wife will be making some beef stew this week, she had bought everything for it. Tomorrow I'll be outside on the tractor plowing along with putting in a load or two of wood, that will help me out. This afternoon I was outside for 20 minutes, man did that feel good.

Oh,.and the flue temp was 650 when I read the ceiling temp.
That surprised me a bit,.as I have run near the top of the orange region on the Condar probe before. Maybe that was with a larger load (e.g. at 5 F storms...)
I didn't measure the ceiling temp above the stove at that time though.
