Any advantage with that Clearskies ,looks interesting.
At the time (few years ago), it was by far the least expensive alternative. apparently they make combustors for EPA rated fireplaces. I have had no problems with it and will double check it's condition when I replace a few gaskets and inspect.

+1
This thread reads like a parable from the bible; everyone reads it but it doesn't mean the same thing to any two people.

Let me give you my interpretation of this whole thing:
1) don't buy diesel foil from this Texas company that shall not be named
2) safest way is to buy from BK dealer
3) Condar fabricates combustors using components from either Clariant or Clear Skies, both of which are good manufacturers. You could get a steel cat from them.
Some smart men here, boy have, I been enlightened,Clariant is a worldwide company and they sell to who knows who a stainless steel catalytic combustor. They do not sell or manufacture the diesel whatever.I'm sure there will be more to this thread,I hope,no way will I spend $536.00 on a steel combustor.

Checked it out,no combustor listed for the King Ultra rectangular shape. I'll call them and see if they have them. Hearts set on a steel one ,and i'm going to find one somewhere.

BKVP clarified everything below. He added the words in all CAPS. If you missed it in post #24, here it is below:

1) don't buy diesel foil from this Texas company that shall not be named BUT SOLD BY CONDAR
2) safest way is to buy from BK dealer IF YOU SPECIFY OEM
3) Condar fabricates combustors using components from either, APPLIED CERAMICS, Clariant or Clear Skies, ALL THREE of which are good manufacturers. You could get a steel cat from them. BUT SPECIFY YOU DO NOT WANT DIESEL FOIL OR RECTICULATED FOAM FOR A BLAZE KING STOVE. DURA FOIL OR CERAMIC MADE BY APPLIED CERAMICS IS JUST FINE.

For the $, I may just order a spare.

I admit I didn't go back and re-read BKVP's insanely cryptic posts, but I thought that's the diesel foil cat he said to avoid, no? See item 1 in post 24.
Item 3 in post 24 says Condar does sell the good steel cat. What isn't clear is how one would differentiate the diesel foil from the good steel cat when making an on line purchase. I've worked with Condar on two occasions and they gave me great service. I would call them up and make sure you are getting the correct steel cat.

So bkvp, in his position, cannot come out and say buy this one and not that one. As a representative of bk it could appear to be a company position and the manufacturer of the diesel crap foil cat might get his undies in a bunch.

If some forum member could become informed of exactly what brand to avoid, what brand to seek, and a good source with a good price then maybe he could pass that on without putting bk in a bad position.

We know that if you buy an oem steel cat from a bk dealer, it would be the good material. We also have one report of very high cost for going this route. It's a shame that Woodstock sells the good cats for under 150$. Not sure if they're taking a loss or if the bk dealers are taking a huge profit. The cat stove world would be better off with cheaper cats.

I've bought from and spoke with Condar too. They will tell you that their product is the good stuff no matter what. They 99% will act dumb if you ask not to have diesel foil.

I will call them Monday and ask about the diesel foil and see what kind of response I get. Perhaps it all depends on who you speak with.

Not for some of us here :). It's just their way of making up for not having an auto-damper, ;lol

If you like, on Monday I will post images of all three and how to tell the differences.

Please do before
Yes, please do.
I go nuts, all I want is a good steel cat. But not for the reported price of $536.00 from BK,just hearsay at this point.I'd like to pin Condar down and see if in fact they sell the Durafoil variant,or anyone else. This is probably the place to get the answer always has been in the past.as a last resort I'll call Bkvp he's always helped me in the past 100%.

I contacted Condar by e-mail today and asked which item number should be ordered for a BK King Ultra and asked for Dura Foil as I had heard there were issues with diesel foil. Here is the response I received back:

Please accept my apologies for the tardy reply. It’s been a busy day!

Yes, the Condar Company acquires catalyst substrate then fabricates and “cans” it here in our North Carolina factory. Our item number is CS-604. The type of substrate we use is proprietary but I can assure you it is not “diesel foil”.

Feel welcome to call me or write if you have other questions. In the meantime, visit www.WoodstoveCombustors.com (our dedicated catalyst website) to order at your convenience.

Best regards,
This e-mail was from their Senior Vice President and Marketing Director. Price for CS-604 is $331.

Still a secret but I'm guessing as mentioned previously the material comes from the Texas company mentioned. Their price is fair cheapes, I could find one from a BK dealer was $430.00 plus tax.

So they did not assure you that the substrate was durafoil either. It was a slippery email and I get the feeling that they have no idea what diesel foil or durafoil is.

Here you go guys! And checking, a Durafoil OEM cat sold by our dealer network should be $375.00 or less for all models. (plus shipping) I would encourage folks to call around.

I'm a bit more trusting than both of you. Now that BKVP came through you can visually see the difference and make an informed purchase.

Not to jump in, but I'm jumping in... Looked up my Jotul Firelight on the Woodstovescombuster provided above and see Condar Co offers the expanding gasket that I have read is not ideal. So confusing. Come to this website for definitive information and sometimes...

Here is the BK steelcat. Durafoil. That is in my princess right now. It looks like a cross between the two that BKVP posted.

Not triangular. Not rolled.
