If it was pin oak it still had the dead fall leaves on it, even now. Pin oak does not shed its leaves until the new leaves come out in spring to push them off. I have neighbors with pin oak as specimen plantings that still have almost all of last year's leaves still attached but definitely browned out over winter.

This must be true oldman47, my pin still has the brown leaves on it. This tree was in the wide open, maybe the leaves got blown off with the stronger winds we had over the winter? I can get some split pics tonight if I don't work too late.

Regardless of any speculation, I would be willing to take the word of the man at the saw mill. It's his job to offer money based on the type of wood it is. If he didn't know what he was talking about, I don't think he would be in that position.

The bark resembles that of willow oak, they thrive around here. Downtown Dover has 'em growing along the main drag as boulevard trees.

Pin oak, aka piss oak is similar, they're both varieties of red. This tree looks more like a pin oak I took down last year... willow doesn't look like pin from a distance.

I would, too, but D8 said his buddy said the guy came and looked at it. Was his buddy there when the guy came? Maybe the guy just did a "drive-by" assessment? Even the rays are hard to see, and only a couple visible in one pic. I know they are sometimes hard to see, but I'll reserve judgement until I see split pics (preferably from a large round as well as a smaller one) and maybe another shot of the end grain to see the rays better. If D8 has to leave work early to get the pics, so be it, the boss will just have to deal with it.

The mill made an offer on the wood, although I'm uncertain, I would guess he didn't do a drive by. Either way, it's Oak - I don't need to see anymore pictures, they Rays are clearly visible to me. Good score D8 - Got yourself a bunch of Oak, and got paid to do the work.

They didn't say who he was,,, just a guy at the sawmill. I know my local sawmills,,,they have people working there that can't read tape measures,,,,

He must be somebody if he has enough authority to offer a certain amount of money on the wood. It is his job to know, that's what makes him the expert. Like taking your vehicle to a mechanic. Same principle - Sure there are shady mechanics out there, so maybe that's the case.

Once again, the person who has the authority to offer money on a log must know the wood they are purchasing. That is skilled labor, it requires knowledge. There is certainly no sawmill that would give this responsibility to someone who didn't know what they were doing.
