I said pin, and he said its in the red family? He took over the mill from his father and did it his whole life so I have to give him the credibility he deserves. I just wanted to know oak yes or no so I know how long to season it, 3 years is what it's getting.

Yessir, when you can see the medullary rays on the split side, like the pics at the end of page 2, you know it's Oak. Yep, Pin is in the same group as Red, Black, Shingle etc. and they all take forever to dry. That live wood, I would split medium, stack and forget about it for 3 yrs. Like claydogg sez, you get tired of the frustration of trying to rush it after a while.It's Oak. You may be able to get away with 2 years if you split it on the smaller side. I was so frustrated trying to burn Oak this year I'm really hoping to have better luck next winter.

It's called good oak! All oak is good. Looks like Pin oak. It burns good. Seasoned of course. It feels lighter than say red or white.Foreman said this is piss oak. Grain is pretty wide on the big stuff but tight on the limbs. Smells like oak when I cut it, hoping it's not some kinda crap. Joful now I know how you feel messing with this big stuff
