The pieces of technology and infrastructure necessary to make distributed grid power from car and home batteries are in development. Some are already showing up in vehicle-to-grid pilot projects. Batteries with more cycle lifetime, bi-directional power-sharing, swappable battery packs, etc. will make this more possible. EVs already have the ability to time their charging to off-peak rate times. The Ford F150 Lightning with 131kW storage can power a home for days. Eventually, with truly autonomous vehicles, the whole paradigm of car ownership may change.
