Feeling the Heat
My wife isn’t going to find the standard Allen keys and box wrench while the load is taking off!
Just thought I'd post an update after mid-season cleaning the chimney after replacing a failing cat and a bypass gasket adjustment.
Had maybe 1/4 of a gallon of flakey creosote and a small layer of glaze. (total of 24-25 feet of stack)
Not too bad, but I had a decent amount of tar staining on my shingles and on some of the brick on the chimney.
Anyone had any luck cleaning black tar staining on brick and shingles?
Normally I let mother nature do its thing with minor staining but it looks like a major oil spill on my roof this time around.
I'm quite afraid that will be the case of a stubborn stain.those tar drips are way more stubborn than you would think. Liking the new cat?
it's not that loud. i would definitely suggest the blower - will really help to move the heat off the stove and into your home.Hi guys,
sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but I think the amassed BK knowledge is right around here...
We decided on a Chinook 30, and I now have a quote:
The Chinook 30 will run $3899.00
Optional blower kit $343.29
Optional Heat Shield $121.66
Do you think that is a good deal?
I'm not really sure if I need the blower but I need either that or the rear shield for alcove positioning. Anyone know how loud it is on low?
Thanks!
Thanks for the info. Now I just need to get an outlet into the alcove that's WAF-compatible...it's not that loud. i would definitely suggest the blower - will really help to move the heat off the stove and into your home.
No idea on the deal, I‘ve never bought a Chinook, but it doesn’t look too far out of line with any other I’ve seen.Do you think that is a good deal?

It is the same.No idea on the deal, I‘ve never bought a Chinook, but it doesn’t look too far out of line with any other I’ve seen.
The blower is a great add-on, I have one on each of my BK’s, and keep them running continuously October thru May. If the same blower as used on the Ashfords, it’s nearly silent on low.
Is the roof creo stain a recent thing, not seen on previous cleanings? It's possible that with the worn-out cat not staying lit as long, the flue got cooler and more condensation occurred up there and dripped onto the roof.I'm quite afraid that will be the case of a stubborn stain.
I got the cat from Applied ceramics and have been very happy with it.
Good to know. From some pictures I saw they look like standard axial fans, maybe 120mmm, but that's hard to say without a scale. So one may be able to swap them out if they are too noisy. It is the same.
when the temps drop below 20 degrees outside.

Bear in mind, he plays drums. The blower might sound pretty quiet to him.Hm, not sure about that.
blower very beneficial for moving a lot of heat when the temps drop below 20 degrees outside.
You both live in states with a two-letter abbreviation that starts with M, but the similarity ends there. This is Mississippi. If the temperature ever drops that low, a state of emergency is declared.
Both my princess and Ashford are nearly silent on low.Hm, not sure about that.

No kidding. This has got to be the warmest winter I can recall since I moved down here. We are saving a ton of wood, but OTOH I don't hear the fat lady singing yet..Well, not this year..
