Yeah, me too. It hit 50 here today. I loaded at 6 AM. Re-loaded a couple hours ago, still 70 in the house after a 16-hr. burn in a 1.5 cu.ft. box. These long-burning stoves are great, ain't they?

Several new cat models. Remember no matter what the substrate temp rating is...the wash coat cannot survive 1600F. In excessively strong drafts (think Alaska, Minnesota, Montana and all of New England) you must have a device/design to protect against these temps, otherwise....remember 1984-1994....

Why would that be? Isn't the wash coat aluminum oxide? That stuff melts at 3700°. Surely it's not already softening at 1700°?
How does design control the draft, thermo keeping the stove from getting to hot and increasing draft? Bear with me if I'm dumb...I'm attempting to function on very little sleep.
Wasn't there some talk of 'sintering' or some such? Regardless, high temp may cause the catalyst to lose adhesion to the base, wash coat, or whatever it is. I've seen cats where there was visible peeling, both ceramic and steel.

The leader in the nation for supplying cats to dozens of industries has made it clear that what looks like an English muffin under a microscope, flattens out, loses surface area and peels from substrate at 1600F.

Perhaps proper design has nothing to do with controlling the draft. An assumption is made that you have properly installed the stove per the manual and do not exceed the specified maximum draft. Similar assumptions must be made with regards to proper gasket seals and fuel quality.
Long before something “melts”, it’s crystalline structure changes. Some pretty cool things can be done with various quenching and heating schedules. I hated that class. Steam tables are way cooler.

Properly installed, properly operated won't change minimum air inlet supply and when stack effect takes over...good luck. One manufacturer says on the cat therm "too hot". I asked what does a user do at that point? "Turn it down!" I said during testing didn't you see increased cat activity/temps with reduce air settings? "Yes, so they'll have to just open the bypass. Guess where the cats are located.

So given that we like to tell each other that it's normal to wrap the cat probe needle around with a new cat....
Loaded up the stove 7pm for the next 20-24 hour burn. Set the thermostat to 3 O'Clock . Walked past the stove and it was GLOWING, Stove top temp was 750 and the Cat temp was around 3 - 3:30 O'Clock , I never had those temps before with the thermostat @ 3... Turned up the fans and turned it to 2.

Something caught in the door gasket? At 3 o'clock, both of mine are almost black boxes, just the faintest red glow.
I bet that is what it is. I did have a faint smoke smell but I was thinking that was because I had a little smoke came out when I loaded it.
Usually at 3 o'clock I usually faint red glow also just thought this was odd. Thanks
Yikes! I'd let someone else beta-test that one, before I jumped in.And the new Jotul hybrid doesn’t even have a bypass!
Maybe if they had one burning in the store, you could assess the design.
Well I shut it down this morning. Got home after work yesterday and the house was 77F. Outside high was 48F. House shot up to 80F after my evening reload. Anything over 75F is too hot inside for me.
I can't turn down any further during the day without stalling, so no more 24/7 for me unless outside temps drop back down. May still do some evening fires though.

Well, it's been almost a week since I installed the OAK and I still smell smoke when I get up in the morning.
