2018-19 Blaze King Performance Thread Part 2 (Everything BK)

After 6 yrs my bricks are in worst shape then those, some of mine have lost a third of their thickness.
And this is with a minimum ash depth of an inch over the bricks.
In my case I believe it is because when I get clinkers they stick to the bricks, and when I clean
the ash out of the stove it pulls a layer off the bricks.
I never had this problem with the bricks in my other stoves.

After a successful sweeping and cleaning of the bk after 7 years of service I found some deteriorated floor bricks. I’ve never seen this before. The bk bricks are a low density looking thing but there is usually a lot of ash under the coals. Is everyone else seeing this in their bk stoves?

I know that the bricks are two layers thick on the bottom and I could flip these over if I want.

Oh and the back corner welds look nice and fresh. No sign of corrosion or pitting.

After our first year, this is what we have.I am not sure if it is normal.

Well more or less another 10 weeks before the 1st test fire / rainy cool day burn here in NWNJ.. amazing how fast all this goes.. bring on 2019-2020 season!!

The BK thread is the best because it is less under threat of death by moderation than your average thread. Unfortunately posts do still get squished, but it's safer than average for hearth.

I know you see it as curation for the sake of future readability and searchability, begreen, but I think the best parts of what I enjoy here would be lost if every thread was strictly on-topic. Search functions are (now) sufficiently good that I can find info on X in a post titled Y, anyway.

I think you're inventing a problem, begreen. We have ample evidence to show that folks rarely actually go looking for something, they just come here and ask it again. At least 8000 of my 14k posts are answering the same eight questions, 1000 times each.

Anyone up for a cat vs. non-cat debate? How many cords of wood someone will need per year? Cracked baffle or depleted cat? Issues wet wood, or photos of custom artwork on a Woodstock? How 'bout a sticky BK thermostat knob? Oh... nevermind, I smell my Ashford calling.

I was thinking BK specific info. There are several specific insightful responses on bypass adjusting, thermostat. etc. If one wants to chat there is a place for that. It's why the Inglenook was created. Folks wanted a place to shoot the chit.

The BK bricks are much softer than traditional bricks. Pumice based I think? There must be a reason for it. Some other brands use it as well. On the King and Princess you can just flip the bricks if you want, other models only have one layer of bricks though.

Cost. Pumice brick is 3x the cost. We may see more as stove makers are trying to eek out the last bit of performance and clean burning in their stoves. Quad and PE have been using pumice brick too for a long time.

And Napoleon, only because it’s the only way to pass emissions...
I agree, it’s likely to become more common, as well as Skamol products. Jotul looks to be full of Skamol.

As long as this erosion is normal, I’m okay with it. It’s not happening very quickly and since I have two layers of brick it will probably never wear all the way through!
