What do you guys do when you have lots of hot coals but not enough for a cold overnight burn and you want to go to bed?

Just rake the coals before you load up, preferably more toward the front where they'll burn down faster and open stat all the way until they burn down. If the house is cooling off too quickly, just stall a while longer on burning them down; load her up and let her run! Just be careful when loading next go around, those coals really pile up and last longer exponentially. You may have some unwanted visitors roll out on your hearth if you aren't careful

Incidentally, next week is Hearth Expo in Nashville. If any one reading this is in attendance (I suspect there are some closet manufacturers on the site) I am meeting with some brilliant combustor scientists that have just come into the stove industry. They have for the better part of a year been doing some tight lipped studies and experimentation...but I will apply lots of pressure and beer to get the best of their findings!

Will BK have a table at the expo, will YOU be there? We are putting on an addition soon. Another burning appliance is in the near future and I think this might be the closest inustru event to me before construction.

They will be at the expo. I'm very excited to see whats new! I can't wait, we are heading down on Wednesday.

We will have a 900 square foot booth at Expo. Yes I will be in Nashville, this Sunday through the following Monday, post Expo.

I sit on several industry committees and boards. There are many meetings throughout Expo so the best thing to do is stop by the booth and ask them to page me (text) when you are there. Or get with Webby, as a BK dealer he has my cell phone number and can get ahold of me...like all BK dealers.

Thanks for the info chris, just looked at the map. looks like nashville is an 11 hour drive.... are there any more industry events in the new york, philly, washington dc, or baltimore area in the next year?

Nashville has over 10,000 registered to exhibit or attend. Affiliate (regional) usually drraw 100-300 people and manufacturers respond accordingly.

I'm sure this is a common problem but I can't seem to find a solution. My door handle on my ultra has gotten every hard to open over the last week. I have to put a lot of pressure on the handle to both open and close. Afraid my wife won't be able to get this to open if I'm gone. Any suggestions?

Yes. They had a batch of handles that the supplier used a brass bushing on. On a few, the bushing swelled due to heat.
Contact your dealer for a replacement. All you will need is a ball end Allen wrench set.

Do you know if this was a problem with the princess doors too or just the king? Mine got really stiff a few weeks ago after punching the roll pin out the bushing and shaft were all galled up too.

What's the purpose of the knife edge door seal anyway?

In my experience with things that must seal a larger surface area worked best. The door on my particular stove has done nothing but reaffirm that for me.

I'm not a fan of it either. Last season or the season before(can't remember) I put a simple metal bushing over my door pins. This put the knife edge in the center of the gasket instead of being off-center. The seal seems to be better this way and require less adjustment.

I also would like the door adjustment to have a fine thread bolt instead of the course thread. This would allow for finer adjustment and not compress the gasket more than is needed for a good seal.

My guess is that it adds a considerable amount of rigidity to the relatively thin steel that is the front of the stove.

I had to shim up the hinge pins on my PE. The BK lines up fine.

I was thinking angle iron for the opening but after what you and Jeff T said I can see why it wouldn't work. I suppose I can see how it still could but not realistic.

The gasket lasts longer and seals much more evenly. I often see gaskets that just smash against the face of the stove that are smashed flat on the hinge side and leaking on the latch side. The gasket is worn out much sooner than it should be.
I rarely ever replace a BK gasket.

My last stove had a groove in the door for the gasket - that then mashed flat against the stove body around the door opening. I like the BK method much better myself, it seems like I have a better seal all day every day, and likely won't have to replace the gasket as often.

I've never adjusted mine, and it is still plenty tight. I checked it about two weeks ago when we got home after a long weekend, and just the other day when the stove was warm. I can pull the dollar bill out between the hinges, but it ain't easy, and it doesn't move at all anywhere else. This is season four.

They'll last a long time when you only have to open the door once a month.

Well, the blower would help move more heat into the room faster, but with the stoves going 24/7, I'd debate the actual need. More importantly, I if I can't get 24 hour burn cycles out of one of these Ashfords, then I'll probably buy a different stove. Not that the other stove would get me 24 hour burns, but if I'm going to have to load both stoves multiple times per day, then the advantages of the BK pretty much vaporize for me. I'm looking to do 12 hour cycles on one, and 24 hour cycles on the other.

The Ashford did a 24 hour burn with the fan on low and the stat in the o-r range of normal. Temps outside ranged fro 2 to 30 degrees during the burn and the house stayed at or above 72 f. Doug fir was the fuel and probably 35 lbs of it. This is a pic of what is left before reloading for another 24 hours.
