The cold and snow has come back. This past Saturday I cut up a fallen ash in the woods and just cut up some kindling and kept the wood filled. The temps the past week have been very mild 50's+. The cold is comming back with I'm sure snow. I have to fill the garage back up and move some better firewood in. I didn't get and pics of the ash tree was cleaning it up inbetween the rain. Hope everyone had a good new year and is ready for some cold.

I had some covers that need some attention yesterday but that never did get done. One was covering two face cord of beech but the wind uncovered the end some so I decided we would get that beech inside because it was wet, it will be ready when we need it.

The three point sander had some covers on it, some were good and others not so good. I covered nine face cord of wood, six face cord of pine along with three face cord of maple. I also straightened out another three covers the wind moved.

Had probably my most productive wood processing day on NYE. Wife and I got all of our rounds and knotted splits down to size. Came across some unusual but cool looking splits (see attached). Where I'm from we usually get the same looking oak and pine. I'm definitely a wood ID noob though.

I spent a few hours yesterday out along the road, in the edge of the woods, cleaning up brush. Chipped the stuff for about 200'. Just need to follow up with the buggy and a saw and pull out the dead fall I didn't chip.

I intentionally waited to this time of year for this work since I get tired of all the hornet's and such lighting me up during warm weather. I ended up with a yellow jacket queen I must of picked up down the back of my jacket. Stung the chit out of the back of my neck.

I am happy to say there should be one less nest next summer now.

I have found 5 hibernating yellow jacket queens in my wood stacks so far. 5 less nests next year... - without much work done

Set up my second wood rack and refilled them both. Officially just brought in the last of my 3-4 year seasoned stuff. Repositioned the tarps that the older wood was under for good airflow for the rest of the wood. Stuff on the left side is all 1 year seasoned stuff, but some of it was standing dead, or had been cut for some time. MC depending on species is anywhere from 15% to right at 20% for some of the oak, some of the oak is dryer than that. I split the heaviest pieces of oak and checked before bringing it in and they were right at 19.8%-20% burying the pins in. I’ll give them a go.

All the stuff on the left is red oak, cherry , ash and maple. Stuff on the right is birch, black cherry and a couple pieces of red oak. Mostly birch and black cherry.

Since we received five inches of new snow, I plowed two driveways. I did plow a few trails and then around the outside fireplace when this small dead maple came down across a trail in the back, before I could move it the deer on the hill in the back came running over, after I left they were eating off it.

with these daily cold starts I been doing, haven't done much actual work

spent half the day sorting through my wood store...it's just too wet here and we have decided to bring firewood into the house into the non-insulated/ unheated area the we call "veranda"

Brought home some dead red oak limbs. Just 3 from up in the crown. Bowling pin diameter and a little less. They sound like em too. Cut them up when I got home. Added some more I had laying here in a pile. 2 chocked full wheelbarrow loads. They're stacked on the porch now. Loaded a heavy face cord in the pickup, from the main pile. Drove it around and parked in front of the bilco doors. On the fence about unloading tonight or tomorrow morning. I'm thawing out now with a cup o' joe.

Not firewood related but since they said we could get another five inches of snow, I plowed two driveways and then a few trails. The deer are still eating off the hill in the back.

Bucked the second and third pine and stacked the rounds, burned some branches and bark that fell off.

We put in two small loads of beech (one pic) since we're only burning it at night. I also put gas in the old snowblower after checking the fluids, it started right up. After doing certain areas with the snowblower, I had worked up a sweat so it was time I came inside.

Nothing going on for firewood work but that will change. I did tell the wife that I would cook supper tonight.

5 Bell Peppers, 1 Fennel Bulb , 1 Onion, 4 or 5 Italian Sausage links browned up & then cut up, Tomato Sauce, Sweet Basil, Parsley, Olive Oil, Garlic, Olives with Salt & Pepper.

It was very good but even better, the boss loved it, I promised the wife some soup so that will be next. How much are you in for?

Always a win there! Wife loves when I do a stew or any kind of soup really especially on the woodstove cooktop. Looking like they are calling for about 6-10" here. Nothing too crazy except the fact we haven't gotten snow in a while in our neck of the woods... lots of panic buying. I do get a kick out of it.

I'm jealous.
My forecast gives me 7% chance of precip between 7 am and noon tomorrow. 2% or lower outside of that window.
