Getting back to the OP, that is what we call soft maple here. Most call it red maple and some even call it silver maple.
The best part of this is that it splits super easy and dries super fast. No, it won't hold a fire as long as hard maple or oak, but do not discount it as bad wood because it isn't. It is good wood. It also makes some of the best kindling because it splits so easy and lights off fast and easy. It will also give you coals in the stove. Just use it mostly for daytime use or if nights, then in fall or spring it will work then. Just don't depend on it for those long cold January nights.
