Now that you mention it, and with a 2nd look at the splits, I'm leaning towards the pignut. Its more than likely smooth bark hickory aka pignut ..... in my experience in dealin with firewood there have been only a few i can think of off tje top of my head that comes a little close to lookin like yhat theres definitel black/sugar maple, theres black walnut which will be darkerin the middle and more widespread but none the less its most likely pignut hickory oh im also forgettin about sweet n black gum but my guess is still hickory
You sure about that? That’s not pig nut hickory. I have a cord or so of it and the bark looks nothing like that.
This is the pignut I am familiar with and have. Bark is very different. You sure about that?
I have young pignut that the bark does not look like that. I have mature pignut that does.
If it makes you feel better, my post where I took a second look was the same reason as yours. I had though hard maple.Second edit. I confused the OPs photos with stove liker’s 🤦🏻♂️.
I did, and it taste like hickory smoked BACON.Taste it!
Yeah shagbark hickory is such a cool tree. And the best hickory in the stove too, in my view. Makes a very lively fire.@hickoryhoarder I was wondering when you'd be around. I hoard it too. My absolute favorite.
Love the shag alone just for the tree itself.
