21 out, real feel of 5. Stove room at 75 and upstairs at 68. Load of oak for the night.
So along with the magnet blocking 60% of the secondary air I still need to use the key damper when it’s this cold and high winds.
It’s interesting to watch the magnehelic I have hooked up to the flue when a hard gust hits. My flue is the tallest thing around and the wind usually hits it from the west straight on. I see the draft momentarily triple in some cases, but the firebox activity does not reflect it thankfully.

Anyhow wife loaded the king with oak yesterday afternoon and here’s what I have left. 2nd pic is todays daytime load of spruce with most of the coals raked forward to burn down. Man 2 y/o spruce takes off. Barely get the load in and it’s starting to sound like a freight train 😬 Windy in the 20s today. Almost done with the first coffee after getting out this am. Stay warm out there all!

King me!

That first pic reminds me of my Dragon when I run it a bit harder in the cold. Only I get a ton of coals....much more room but, I love that King.

Got home this morning house was around 66. Turned the thermostats down, got the kids on the bus came out and cleaned out some ashes and gave the door glass a quick wipe. Loaded up with mostly red oak and some red maple with pine kindling for a cold start. Currently 64 in the house, 21 out with flurries, wind with wind chills around 3. Stove warming up quickly. Now time to have some breakfast and some more coffee.

Yea I’ve seen my gauge go from .08 to .22 with the big gusts. It’s pretty cool to see the effects of the wind in real time

Well looks like the englanders door gasket is bad after only 2 seasons of burning. Kind of disappointed in that. How long does everyone get out of theirs usually?
I just did 2 seasons on the Panadero. Had to replace mine before the burning season started this year…I was a pain to remove. I was gonna go another season, but in chatting with a Panadero rep, I was advised that users must replace the door seal annually. The wording in the owners manual says “recommended” and I pointed this out and Panadero got company line with me.

Anyway, I replaced the seal myself…I used a little too much silicone (I used the Panadero seal kit and the “silicone” came with the kit. Frankly, that foul tube was terrible, I would have rather used a caulking gun cartridge.

Here are a few shots…removing the old mastic was a challenge; I essentially destroyed a new flathead screwdriver to clean out the majority; then wire brush (I had a few new, little ones I had purchased on a whim). Gauging the amount of silicone with a tube rather than a caulking gun I found very difficult and I ended up putting a bit too much…I was concerned about stressing the hinges and I did file off a tiny bit of the latch to get a more confident latch action; it’s been working fine…also, I didn’t quite do the rope tape perfectly on one end and it has come undone now…if it comes apart, I will have to redo the seal…Frankly, a much more difficult task than an online video could cover…I’ve only ever done one of these (this one). I’ve been doing all kinds of building work professionally throughout my life and this task was high order of difficulty IMO.

Just lit up the Délice…my typical mix; we have company tonight, probably will play some Mahjong after supper
Not to take the thread off the rails, but...

A Mahjong player!?!? What rules do you use? We were taught to play using the Jekyll Island rules, but have never played "standard" rules. I have no idea how different it is. I tried to read the rules of play book that came with our set, but the translation doesn't make much sense to us... Someday I would like to learn and I'm sure we could by playing with someone who knows how.

21 out with a real feel of 3. Stove will be getting stoked like a locomotive when i get home.
Now this is what winter is supposed to be like.
Same temps, same winds here this morning as you had....You need some of this aggravation to make it a real winter. And to think it was 59 on this date last year.

I was taught directly in San Francisco in around '94 at a party at my house. My wife and I bought a set when we first moved to London in '97 and played very often with our Belgian neighboors. We also struggled with the terribly translated rules...we have it down now...we should start another thread :-)

Spruce load from 830am done, night load of cherry, maple and oak shorties charring as we speak.

Radiant heat was becoming untenable when I was fighting with them shorties, had to take a knee and catch some cool air 😉

Last night's 10.40 load of oak was done at 1.30 pm.
I forgot the wind chill temps but the day high was 32, not 35.
Still howling here.

Loaded two splits of cherry, 1 of pine, and a bucket of sticks at 1.30. that's done now.

It's 29 now with a wind chill of 20, a low forecast of 26. Tomorrow 40 (!).
Upstairs it's 70.
Red Oak shorties and pine.

The wife had a few fires today with some maple we had, when I came in from plowing the temp up here was 71, I'm thinking the basement was 81 but didn't check.

I'm burning down some coals but that should be ready for an overnight load by 10:30.

The homemade tomato soup was a hit with the wife along with the grilled cheese. Stuffed manicotti on Sunday.

I heard the stove ticking from upstairs. Thermostat opening up a bit I guess.

I just made tomato soup earlier this week! I’ll have to take some pictures next time.

And then move the thermostat a 20th of an inch more closed and get this.

They can be touchy! I can have my damper 3/4 closed and moving it just the tiniest fraction will change how it's running... Like going from 75% closed to 73% closed if it starts dropping too much can make it really takeoff.
