I think I would utilize the cheap oil if that was an option here. Pellets beat electric based heat hands down. I get the pyro side of things here too as it is nice to burn and have a fire going but it would be more of an evening enjoyment vs. a 24/7 operation. I love my fires but I also like to keep some fun tickets in the wallet too. And I like some relaxation time which I achieved by not processing wood and going to pellets. All things being relative there is a point and cost where they all become bullshit.

Every supplier around here is LOADED with pellets. I have a good feeling once March hits there will be some good deals on pellets. Tuesday I bought another ton at $213 bucks. They are Greenways out of an oak hardwood flooring place in Collinwood, TN. I picked them up on sale at Orschlen's Farm Supply over in IN about 25 minutes away. This price is with a 5% veterans discount also. Greenways were recommended by a friend and seem to be a very good pellet. I have noticed some longer pellets like the Pro Pellets had but nothing to concern me.

Last year no one put pellets on sale ...... ever! Even over stock in the spring. This year I think they are feeling the lost interest due to cheap oil and propane costs therefore most places have a large stock of tonnage on their hands and they are not moving them. I have a feeling when it gets cold, cold some may be sold but I do not see a sudden surge and huge demand. Great!

As I've stated before. It is silly not to save money (if you can) flipping a switch for cheaper non-effort heat vs. toting 40 pounders, tending a stove and cleaning. Simple and cheap would work for me. Now for all the fire box die hards...... I get that too BUT I don't want to hear it. I will agree there is something to be said for a nice fire and the wonderful warm heat they put out. However, there is no way you would pull into the gas station across from another selling gas for 30 - 40 cents more per gallon just because you prefer the color of the sign on the station selling the same energy / fuel for more. Would ya? If you are that much of a stubborn idiot then it's time to set aside some pride and go see a shrink.<>:):):ZZZ......... LOL!

I think these BB's and other suppliers were hit by the pellet manufacturers and had a higher buy in price but are also holding out hoping to still maximized their profits with excessive mark ups too. Funny how pre-buy prices (which these suppliers still make money on) jumped way up when the anticipation of demand and colder temps came closer. Yes, businesses are in business to make money. I hope they get a huge reality check on the price gouging though. I also hope these pellet manufacturers get some leery buyers all the way around next fall too and a bunch of stock sitting taking up valuable storage space at their plants. They need a reality check. Pellet prices have soared in a short time. My buddy started with pellet stoves 6 - 7 years ago and his first three seasons he paid $159 to $169 per ton. Then they jumped in price over night the following season and have continued to do so.

I am ALL FOR cheap oil prices. If anything it will put pressure on the gold plated fancy bag labeled junky pellet prices and keep the greed and price gouging down to a dull roar. I have seen way more pellet stoves for sale here this year and cheaper than last year already on craigslist. Many citing they are installing new central systems or just have installed one so their pellet stove is no longer needed. I doubt these peeps have a crystal ball and are really thinking or seeing very far into the future.

I'm not selling mine because I believe fuel prices are much more unstable than pellet pricing in the grand scheme of things. I have also seen wood burning stoves on craigslist and the pricing has climbed a lot oddly enough. Years past people were almost giving them away or happy to find a sucker to carry it out of their homes on the cheap. This fall pricing is different and higher than usual. I don't really get it because oil and such is so cheap around here this heating season.

Keep your fingers crossed that fuel and oil stay cheap.

Before I even start, for those in a region with no oil or low cost fuel, don't get your hummers in an uproar, this probably doesn't pertain to you !! OK ?

In past times ( I've stated this once already if not more times) when oil gets low enough in price it's then just plain affordable ( it's like comparing 35 cents for a coke or 40 for a Pepsi, and you can get a generic brand soda for 30, who really cares, ah nobody ?). People no longer have an interest in alternative fuel and stoves like pellet stoves even if they are cheaper than oil, never mind higher. Just suppose ( like in the Jimmy Carter Days of the fake oil shortage) oil should drop below $1, say to 75cents a gallon, just saying if. Would anyone even bother with pellets at all if using oil as the main source of heat in their house? Not really because at that price oil isn't a struggle to pay for any longer and it's easier to heat with. I know that that circumstance took me off of coal back in the 80's for a number of years till oil rose in cost again.

Some people like a fire in the house, true. But they probably would rather a real wood fire in a decorative wood stove than a pellet stove fire if it's just optional ambiance.

No, pellet heat was touted as an economical alternative to the "expensive" oil. Period. That was the premise. I don't see any magic happening in the house in burning pellets and cleaning the stove every other week if there is no savings. And at a certain low enough price point the saving don't even matter anymore because you're talking about wasting peanuts If and that is a big If oil is more costly than pellets when both are down in the trenches for cost..

To follow-up, EIA doesn't have that spreadsheet on its site anymore. And I thought it was actually useful. Silly me. Big gov knows best.

Thank you for your inquiry to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) concerning the heating fuels calculator. We no longer offer this tool, However you may find some helpful information at http://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.cfm?id=987&t=7.

Hope this information is helpful. Please contact us again for energy statistics or data.

$1.39 oil $1.88 gas, you can keep your overpriced pellets, Tim your full of chit

I bought propane @ .99 cents a gallon. Haven't had the furnace going in years, tried to kick it on and the mercury switch is busted. So I'm back to burning pellets and corn. I just filled up with diesel fuel today $2.21 a gallon. About $45 to fill her up. I can remember a time when I spent $175 to fill he up. Hope this stays this way, my wallet likes it.

Holy Ole! I can't believe the price of pellets some of you have to pay! I went and bought 1 bag yesterday, just for starting my stove and they were $4.49 at Menards. The most expensive were $5.99 softwood. So the cheapest wood be (on purpose) $224.50 a ton. Still can't go there when I'm paying only $130 a ton for corn. I don't know what the price of oil is here as I have NG, don't know the price of it either, it just doesn't warm us up like the stove does. 90% efficient furnace, so they say. Older house, not the worse insulation but hardly the best, problem is with aluminum siding it's slow going insulating from the inside. I have about 2/3 of the house done. Need to motivate and get after it again.

I know that switching to pellets cut my oil consumption by 600 gallons per year. I just filled up my oil tank for $1.89 per gallon. $1.89 * 600 = $1134. I typically use 3 tons of pellets in lieu of 600 gallons of oil. $1134 / 3 = $378.

Based on current oil prices, as long as I can get pellets for less than $378 per ton, I'm still saving money.
Tim, do you put any value add for not having to schlep pellets, clean stove etc.

Im so used to doing it I hardly even think about it. I do , however put alot of value in the cozy feeling I get near a warm fire. That alone is worth a premium to me.
