This Big Ash will be in the record Books

Then the diameter is 31 inches. I can pretty much guess and I thought that 26 inches seemed small

Forgot that I said I would measure a big Sassafrass that I know of in the woods. Went out with tape measure in hand and camera. It is very dark out with storms brewing so sorry for the lousy pictures. The tree is 98 inches in circumfrence. I was able to hook on the bark and get a good reading. Divide that by pie which is 3.74 and the tree has a diameter of 26.2
I thought it was bigger and I was not quite down to the base of the tree when I measured it.

Not that it will probably make that much difference but they measure the diameter at chest height, but that is a big sass.

Mecreature, how about posting some pictures of your sassafras trees?

I live more north. I used to camp along the White River down south.
I remember how big some of them were but TimJ has a really big tree.

I measured a maple in my front yard last weekend. 101 inches @ 5ft.
I had my 4th grade boy give me the diameter.

I have many Sassafrass that are 6" to 8" diameter that the birds already put holes in.
I hate those trees and wish I did not have a one in the woods

Loved sassafras tea when I lived back there.
The spring leaves are good for what ails you too.
Great medicinal trees.

Good thread, thanks! I have a Silver Maple in my backyard that could've been a Champion if I'd ever bothered to get it measured. Then, last winter, I lost a 2' diameter branch that also cost me 40' of spread.

Cool specimens, Golfandwoodnut - If you ever get near forward township, (near the exit at molnar's on rt 51) there's an absolutely huge white oak PA champion at round hill park.

Very true!! But even in it's declining condition now, I'd like to have "your big ash" in my yard I'm just getting into the wood stove thing...........7+ cords would be the proverbial "mother load" for me and my little house

Seems like a load of stuff that it can't go in the record books. What is the reasoning behind that decision? I mean it's there and it grew so it should be a record.........It just seems ridiculous to me....

The Big Tree (or Champion Tree) records that I have seen are intended to list the largest living specimen of each tree species. It isn't meant to be a record of the largest one that ever lived, which is perhaps why the big ash can't be in the record books if it dies. Every once in a while a record holder tree dies and a new champion takes over the record.

Oh No! That is one of my all time favorite trees!

Dennis, there is a Sassafras grove near here that is fairly famous. The trees are all very large for the species. I have never measured them but I would guess they are 24 in and bigger. I will have to take a picture some day.
