I think there actually is a few NEAR consensus' on this issue, from what I've read:
1. A 16# Monster Maul will split just about anything in 1 swing if you can/want to swing it
2. An 8# maul will split MOST stuff the MM will for less effort
3. A 6# will do NEARLY the job of an 8# for less effort
4. A 4 1/2# Fiskars splits like a bigger maul for less effort
5. You really can split with a light axe if you learn how (& take more swings)
6. Most folks are great at explaining why their choice is THE BEST. Maul folks say the Fiskars is too light, short & dangerous; Fiskars folks say mauls are too heavy, slow & hard on the body.
I have used axes, mauls & fiskars & I do think the short handle & sharp edge of the Fiskars make it more dangerous, but you have to balance that with the much less stress on your body from a bigger maul.
