Try to get some reasonably seasoned larger splits. Ash would be good. Save the smaller stuff for starting fires and stuffing in between the larger splits.

Got the stove down to about 275 and filled it with some big splits. 4 good size pieces. Left the damper open until I got some secondary burn ( which took like an hour) then backed it off till closed pretty quickly . At 425 now let's see how this goes

I noticed the door glass was loose on my F600 after two or three weeks of burning. Not loose like rattling in the frame, but during cleaning I saw that the glass was off center on the gaskets and resting on the bottom clips. I hadn't had any burn problems but I centered it on the gaskets and retightened those tiny retainer clips anyway. Maybe something to look at.

My VC Encore 2n1 was running hotter than I thought it should on a full load of mid size oak splits, hitting 650+ with air fully down in either direct or cat mode. Its a new stove, only a few days running now. Plus I'm a noob to all this, so it really had me concerned.

Upon close inspection, I noticed the glass panes weren't compressing against the seals enough: I could move them around with finger pressure. Then I noted the ash tray latch roller wasn't going over center with enough pressure to compress the seal to the point of immovability of the ash pan door.

Tightened up the window glass. Adjusted the ash pan roller a bit tighter.

Now the stove only hits 540F during mid burn and runs most of the time at 500 with the air control at 50%. With air fully down it gets too cool, like under 400. So on this fuel now I can throttle it anywhere from 400 to 600+. Superb! This is one fine running stove. That's a HUGE change in running temp and control by making only two very minor adjustments.

i checked the glass and ash box and door gasket. both are fine to me. i woke up in the middle of the night to find the stove at 400 . glass was jet black though. im wondering if loading the stove at a lower temp with smaller coal bed did help. i will try again tonight.

I think what you are experiencing is normal for a non cat, especially a Jotul. They love to run! I've had a bunch of Jotuls, they love to rock out if reloaded while the stove is still hot! I would reload a hot stove right before bed, but I would leave the air turned all the way off. It seemed to behave itself this way. Give it a try.

Would you still rake the coals forward when doing this? Have not tried it yet but me being black and white I rake almost all the coals forward and put the bigger split on the bottom basically not on any coals, put another split on top of that and put a smaller split on the coals. Now I am worried that I am doing wrong and the splits are smoldering. I have flame but not much secondary's (if any). Just trying to keep the stove from getting over 700. I am around 500 but am worried about smoldering. It's dark so I cannot see the cap.

Might give this a go tonight jsut want to make sure I am doing it right. If I keep the air closed all the way I am not sure if the bigger split will light. My bigger splits currently are around 3 to 4 inches. I know these are small but it is what I have. I do have some in the 5 to 6" ( a few) range but am not burning those yet.

Sounds like an air leak to me but i dont know the stove well. But getting over 700 with air closed all the way and wet wood that would be my first place to look
Bholler, a question why would wet wood cause it to over Fire? Is it because it is still off gassing and throwing off lots of heat?

I won't load over 400 anymore. With a full stove and damper closed it will take off if above 400. I put my largest splits in at night. Even if it smokers for a while it will eventually light and burn slow.

Not sure why i said that i must have got the threads mixed up

3 to 4 inch splits can run away in a hurry, do you have a stovetop or chimney thermometer? You might want to start shutting your air down much faster. I have a chimney thermometer, and start cutting the air back when it hits 300 degrees. I have 4 splits in my stove right now that fill my entire 3 cf firebox. It's purring along like a kitten with the stovetop at around 575:)
