Interesting, looks like a will protected hearth as well as noncombustible surroundings, obviously though something went seriously wrong.

Yeah the stove and all piping was professionally installed Class A double wall pipe. The hearth was beyond overbuilt, clearance to combustibles exceeded on all sides. I even built the hearth so it was impossible to get within C2C range unless you put something on the pad itself that shouldn't have been there. I have lost sleep over it the past few days going over every possible scenario. At this point im glad no one was hurt but breaks my heart all the hard work and $$ I put into that house is gone.

I read this after having left my stove running to come to work.
Now I'm paranoid.

I think it was determined that the new owner fell asleep with the door open. If you closed the door and have a working appliance with a clean chimney and good wood your paranoia is probably unecessary. I have a health respect for my stove but don't think twice about going to bed or work with a fire going.

I don't think any of us ever see a story like this on our local news, or see a posting like this and don't pause for a moment. I know I do! While the loss of a nice home is tragic thankfully the owners were able to walk away without injury or the death of a family member. Too many are not nearly so fortunate.

This was my first thought after seeing the avatar.
