Sorting your wood...

I have been saving the end of this stack of what I think is back locust for 4 years. it finally fell over onto the adjacent stack so I decided it's finally time to burn it. Well, to be honest, my dad kept making fun of me for saving wood for so long! It made me sad to haul it up to the stack at the house for burning. Perhaps I will save a little bit in another stack somewhere...it's aging fine with no rot or bugs. I think it's around 6 years old now.

I'm starting to feel pretty good about having limited kinds of wood to burn. Tamarack, red fir, and lodge pole pine make up 99% of my pile and really it all burns the same to me. If there is a piece of pine on top I will use it to get the fire going but once its all dry it all burns good. And trying to get my wood stacking kids to sort the pile would be a pita.

I sort by type of wood and size. Oak separate from non-oak. Cedar, which splits easily and is great for starting fires, goes in a separate stack. I need some short pieces to go NS when starting my Jotul 550 using the top-down method. Those also go in a separate pile.
