I give up--no sarcasm real or intended.
But come on now, comparing the many small stove makers listed, mostly defunct, to the few now standing is like ...................say IBM PC's, or Compaq, or Radio Shack are great computers.
My fav B&J ice cream is _______ ( besides, Ben & Jerry's ain't "Ben & Jerry's" anymore ).

A Dutchwest is better looking? I'd have to disagree there... Although it's a decent stove, I've never been a fan of its looks. I should back up, I'm not a fan of its performance either, it's kinda durable though. Scratch that.. It's not bad for a VC, how's that? ;lol
The original dutch west cat stoves worked pretty well for their time. After vc took them over they where pretty similar functionally. I kind of like the look of them but I agree not better than most vcs

Well you were the one who said early on they had no competition for quality and innovation. Absolutely at this point there is no comparison between vc and those defunct companies. But if you are comparing their early stoves you need to compare them to the other stoves at the time and that is what we are doing. They had quite a bit of competition on all of those points.

How can one woodstove be "quieter" than another? Mine hasn't made a peep since its been here... or are you talking about the accessory fan kits?

I've heated homes with both a VC Dutchwest (large) and a BK (Princess). The BK has more than twice the functional burn time, is quieter, is simpler...

I guessed that meant that downdraft stoves can rumble when the afterburner kicks in, though this thread was supposed to be about cat stoves.

In my post I was referring to the fan noise. My Dutchwest fan was much, much louder than my BK.

I will say that I liked my VC stove. I bought it new and it heated my house with it for 6 years. The only reason I got a BK is because I moved and by then I had joined this forum and learned about some other stoves my local dealers didn't have. I had some issues with that ring that introduced secondary air warping pretty bad and I didn't like the smallish ash pan but I spent many a day happily sitting in front of it. It was way better than some of the other crap stoves I've used in my 25 years heating with wood.
