BTW, a local seller that will sell you a grapple truckload of logs or sell you cut and split charges $100 (cash and carry) for one pickup bed loaded level to the sides with Birch that was cut last Winter but split and heaped this Summer. It is what it is. You can bring your MM but it won't do a thing except maybe get a laugh. Measure tape won't help either. If you drive a short box, it is still $100. Toss it in or stack it, it's still $100.

Want a better deal? He'll sell you a 12 cord load of logs for $960 delivered to your yard.

I don't need any ash hoe apologizing for me. I'm so sick of you urban wood burners complaining about craigslist this and craigslist that and every seller is a crook! Don't have an acre to store a decent supply of firewood? Then just stay hooked to the grid or grin and bear it.

If you're so sick of it then why bother posting? Maybe you should only reply to posts by people that live in the backwoods of NW Ontario who deal in truck loads of logs.

Wether you live in NYC or NW Ontario, you should expect to recieve goods purchased as they were represented. 3x3x4 does not equal 4x4x4. 40% MC does not equal 2 years c/s/s.

Just because there appear to be alot of unscrupulous wood sellers around doesn't mean people should just accept it. I am a new wood burner and will be purchasing some wood soon and will expect to receive what is advertised and will not accept otherwise.

With all due respect . . . what was actually represented? I doubt many FW sellers make a specific claim on MC. Seriously, how could they? If they did, would you check every piece, rejecting those that were too high? What about the ones that were lower than the seller said? Would you then have to pay a premium for those pieces?

Most FW sellers will make a claim of how 'old' the wood is. Buyers certainly should find out what this means. Was it cut down that many months ago? Or was it bucked that many months ago? Assuming it's split, was it split immediately, or just last week? Personally, if I had to buy wood, I'd go see the sellers operation. That will tell you more about what you're going to get than the MM would.

I think the size issue ought to be a non-issue. And it sounded like the seller in the OP was willing to acknowledge that there was not as much volume there as he had originally represented.

I can tell you this . . . around here typical pricing is $200/cord. I know this cause I have friends that sell, and friends that buy. If you spend some time actually processing FW, you will see that there is not a whole lot of profit at that price. Pull out your MM when the seller never said what his MC was, and yer gonna go on a list. Soon you won't be able to buy FW cause no one will sell it to your city azz. May not seem 'fair' to you, but you'll be wood-less none the less.

Some peeps on here might be a bit blunt in their advice, but the advice is good, just the same.

Rock on

Society in general has become trained with a Burger King mentality. "Have it your way", AND NOW DAMN IT!
And when a consumer is in a pinch and waits till the last minute they look at the wood stove and think, gee, this should be as easy as going over to the wall and turning the NG thermostat up and having good heat , my way, NOW. When it doesn't happen their way they get pizzed and blame it on everyone but themselves for not preparing. It's just too easy.

When a person goes to a wood vendor to make a deal he has no obligation to buy as well as the vendor has none to sell. If a deal can be made and both parties are satisfied so be it.

No matter what the dimension/MC of the wood was the OP and vendor made a deal. Thus no one on either end got screwed.
If you think I'm wrong then the vendor has the right to claim that the OP ripped him off and didn't pay the full amount of $.

I've been in the FW biz for 23 years and I've seen it all. The stories I could tell, you woodn't believe.
As a consumer you need to remember.Firewood does not come in a pipeline to your house. It is NOT clean and filtered. May contain bugs or small rodents or reptiles OR ice, mud,and water. It's not as easy as pushing a button on the wall (thermo). Winter weather CAN/WILL slow or stop firewood deliveries/production.You are not the vendors only customer and your delivery probably isn't going to happen fast due to the labor involved. Firewood is not oil, gas, propane, solar,or electric. IT IS HANDS ON.

CRAIGSLIST IS A JOKE. DO NOT RELY ON IT AS YOUR ONLY SOURCE FOR FIREWOOD. IT'S AN EASY PLACE FOR WANNA BE VENDORS AND FLY BY NITES BECAUSE IT'S FREE. NOT SAYING YOU WON'T FIND A RELIABLE VENDOR ON CL BUT IT'S UNLIKELY.

We call the likes of you BMWs. Instead of Bitching, Moaning, and Whining, go out and do something about it.

I'm not siding with the seller. Purportedly there was misrepresentation that lured the buyer under false pretense. Lodge a complaint with Weights and Measures or vote with your feet (and wallet) by walking away. Again, I reiterate that a deal is a deal if both parties agree. Payment concludes the deal. If you pay up, shut up.

The OP was told it was a 4x4x4 pile, then he shows up and it's a 3x3x4 pile. That is a misrepresentation.

...and I think many wouldn't have noticed unless they done brung one of them fancy city measurin' devices. Once again, I knew what I was getting and made the deal. The title was supposed to be funny and catch the eye. FWIW, the seller had never seen a MM before. I only broke it out when I saw the pile wasn't the right size.

I'm not bitching, moaning or whining. And I am doing something about it... that being posting a reply to your negative and unhelpful post. In fact, you are the one who is whining about he OP's post... "I’m so sick of you urban wood burners..."

The OP is free to "BMW" about his experience on this board because that is what forums are here for... open discussions of ideas and experiences. If you don't like the topic, you need not join in.

You have a point saying "if you pay up, shut up" but the OP had already invested 40 minutes of drive time into the deal only to discover the product was not what he expected. If the seller was 5 minutes down the road, I'm sure the OP would have just said no thanks.

ROTFLMAO
I think the humor was lost on us. My point of a MM getting your ass measured around here, was meant to be funny and not personal advise but think the humor was lost there too. Mind you, if you lived around here, I would advise you leave the MM at home. There are ways of sizing up a stack of wood without whipping out the measure tape right away. Most pallets have at least one dimension that is 48 inches and most people know where 48 inches are in relation to their body. After all, the base of a light switch is 48" off the floor.

Look, I'm sorry this escalated into hurling insults even if I don't take back what I said. I'm real serious though about a deal being a deal. You have a right to complain, but when you strike the deal, you give up that right unless facts only come to light later. You can still complain that you didn't get the deal you were expecting but as for screwed, well... poor choice of words.

So my question is why buy it then.
Walk away.
I have walked away from deals after seeing them on everything from a travel trailer, to a rifle.
You are not commited to buy if the product does need meet your satisfaction.

As you said, "open discussions" just joining in on this BMWfest.

Maybe Craig should create a separate forum for craigslist BMWs. Frankly, I don't see anything constructive about BMW about craigslist ads so they could just as well go straight to the ashcan.

Wait!! Seriously?!? Do peeps actually buy FW on CL?!? TFF

Well then, your highness , appearently, we should apologize to you for being "urban wood burners" - whatever THAT is. Shame on us for heating our homes with wood(wait...don't u do that). The nerve of us- why, scrounging, felling, cutting, splitting, stacking, our own fuel supply to keep our families warm all winter without writing a check to the oil-man(oh,wait...you do that, too). We are some sort of sons-of-b/t#*s to live on a block with 22 other houses (this is an UNFORGIVEABLE crime against humanity)!! The truth is- I don't judge a man by the color of his skin(or,in this matter, the GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION OF HIS HOUSE), but by the quality of his character(of which you, appearently ,have very little.)
Perhaps you, too, should practice withholding judgement of others, and maybe.....just maybe, attempt to contribute constructively. I guess thats just us citi-folk thinkin out loud, again.

P.S.-- I live on a 1/4 acre with about 8 cords c/s/s neatly in the yard. Maybe one day, when I'm all grown-up and kool like you, I might have an acre "to store a decent supply of firewood", but until then, this SUB-urban wood burner recommends you kiss my city a*#(hoe).

I bought firewood until I gradually weaned completely off it year 3. I didn't find any difference between CL, flyers on the bulletin board at the gas station, newspaper classifieds, etc. Of course you always do better if you are equipped to pick it up and you have the easy option of driving away from a deal you aren't happy with. Best way is to find someone who is happy with their supplier and go see what they are happy about.

FWIW, I think the seller here has the right model. You come, you look at it, you decide if it is worth it to you. Just should have been more careful about communicating his pallet measurements. Can you imagine being in a business where all the risk is on you dropping, processing and delivering wood to some clown who knows how far away from you who refuses the shipment after getting his moisture meter out or arguing how much wood is in the load? I thought I might get around it by delivering full cords stacked in the trailer. The only problem with that is then that clown is going to argue that it isn't stacked tight enough, the splits are 16 +- an inch, split too big, split too small, sees a piece of silver maple in there, etc. My experience is that the percentage of clowns in the country is the same as the city, people are people.

It can be tough finding a good firewood guy.
I have the tendency to go with the low bid, and that can be a problem.

Both expectations and behavior are very different between city/suburban and rural. Where I live, you betcha pulling out a MM or a tape measure would get your name passed around as somebody not to bother doing business with. People living in a culture that not only values but expects honesty also expect trust in return. That's not the way it works in the city/suburbs, where half or more the folks you try to do business with are trying to figure out what they can sucker you out of before they disappear from your life and move on to the next sucker. Can't get away with that in small towns.

The trouble comes when city/suburban folks move out to the country, bring their expectations and suspicions with them, and fail to notice that things work differently here. When I first moved out here and hired a local guy to do some fairly substantial work on my house, I tried to give him a deposit and he looked at me with a mixture of sadness and horror. It's an honor system here, and if you move here from the city, you better figure that out fast or you'll alienate all kinds of people you're going to need.

Wow...This forum used to be pretty cool. Now it seems as though the self-righteous, childish and pretentious...yes you LLigfeta.... are trying to rule the roost and the rest of the community have no problem with that.
Well I will call you out. Quit being a jerk on the forum...whatever you do in the real world is up to you.

NolaMike....most all of the members of the forum are not like the LLigfeta at all. Dont let one person or a few people discourage you from asking questions and or relating your experiences.

Well said DMX_512. ;-)

C'mon guys....we should be talking about burning wood, not each other.I had hoped the petty BS we'd all left behind in Junior High or soon afterwards. Sit back, relax from busting your acorns all day, enjoy that wood warmth & open a couple cold beers or 4.

I'm lucky- have a friend with some acres and he lets me
