Running Out of Wood?

i am somewhat of an old timer. i sell firewood, don't burn it. sold my 38th cord for this season on february 10th. 5 days before prostate surgery. out of wood and out of juice. will resume cssing in april.

Do you sell seasoned wood? And if so, what variety of tree and how long do you season it before selling it?

In general, what do you consider to be your obligation in selling seasoned wood and what is the responsibility of your customers? We often hear about people who thought they were buying seasoned wood, only to find out it was much too green to be useable without drying a lot longer.

In this area the largest firewood provider says “I sell firewood. It’s up to the customer to season it.” I like his approach, he never claims its seasoned and will tell you it’s not right up front. He sells an unbelievable amount of wood!

Two years ago we ran out and I had to scrounge as much dry-ish wood from our woods as I could. Last year I ended up with about five splits left over! This year I'm on track to have about a half a cord left over to start with in the Fall.

My method is to cut up as much as I can all spring and summer long and then order a seasoned cord of hardwood in the Fall. I figure if I keep up with this I'll be a year or two ahead in a couple years.

After just scraping by and coming up short other years, I worked like a dog the past two years and currently have 15 cord stacked in my firewood racks.
I burn about six in the coldest winter , so I'm set for now.
Since this winter is a pathetic failure , I've been refilling my racks as fast as I burn, scrounging right through the winter.
If I ever start into a burning season with an empty rack or two, I'll buy some , preferably green, stack it, and let it season until needed.

The beauty of being years ahead, is never running out of good dry wood.

I'm in the position now of having to burn primo Hickory in what is now shoulder season here in Michigan. Think I'll head out to the woods and cut some dead Ash 4-6" to burn right now. Winter came in fast and is slowly leaving.

I just brought some pine up for the shoulder season. Not going to waste the good stuff for that.

I'm really starting to like my new mini-splits, they were made for this time of year. Will like them even more come wooding time.
