We enjoyed our PE Summit insert, (Series A) for many years but after having the blower die for the second time, I decided to get a Summit LE insert. I really like the new blower design but it appears that in order to accommodate the new blowers, the new PE insert designs jut out significantly more from the fireplace face than the older style inserts. The old one was like +/- 5", the new one is closer to 10". We have a flush raised fireplace opening, the hearth opening is about 8" off the floor. The older Summit insert was approved for a raised fireplace opening and it only needed ember protection. The new manual doesn't show anything about raised opening approval but I saw this set of install specs from Tom Oyen, (RIP), on the website Summit LE insert install specs and it shows approval for the raised fireplace opening so not so concerned about that. I have a large hearth pad which would fulfill the ember protection.

What I'm trying to figure out is how goofy is 10" of stove floating in the air going to look like? I would feel better with something underneath and will probably build out the hearth in the future but was thinking of just putting a piece of granite or even concrete blocks underneath in the short run.

If any other Summit insert owners have been in a similar situation, would love to hear what you did.

= The 10 7/8" projection is for the thin ashlip. That was the same for the 2011 series C as for the new LE. The Series A manual lacks dimensions.
What is the ashlip projection on your series A? FWIW, the convection lid overhang increased from 6 5/8" on the Series C to 7 1/2".

Do you have a picture of the current setup?

This is a pic of the old Summit Insert, but just to show the raised and flush nature of the fireplace opening

Hi BG, thanks, I don't have a pic of the current setup as I'm waiting on a stainless elbow to finish the install, the vent is located differently spot than the old insert and I didn't want to pull on the stainless liner too much. You're right, I forgot it was the measurement to the ashlip so I think like 6-7" is the right number from the fascia & surround to the front of the door.

And, again courtesy from Tom O. and the Wayback Machine, (man was that guy meticulous) - Summit Install specs from 2018 - "If Fireplace Opening is raised above hearth: Support must be provided for 6-5/8" insert extension outside firebox" ... So, it sounds like I should have had something there all along even with the older Summit Insert. It would be nice for Pacific Energy to note that in the manual.

I have a piece of granite fencepost that should work for this season and then I'm going to extend the hearth a bit for something more permanent.

How far does the required ember protection protrude in front of the door?

I think it will be ok.
Tom was a gem and a credit to the industry. I miss him a lot.
