Talk me into replacing my buck 80 insert

  • Active since 1995, Hearth.com is THE place on the internet for free information and advice about wood stoves, pellet stoves and other energy saving equipment.

We promote the EFFICIENT, RESPONSIBLE, CLEAN and SAFE use of all fuels, whether renewable or fossil.
Congratulations!

Do download the manual from the BK site now, it has some specs (total flue height, elbows, vertical rise before going thru the wall etc.) that you want to know before you buy flue parts.

Do get double wall inside.

Maybe @Ashful is close to you in case you want to talk to someone with the same stove.

Yes I have plenty of room for rise off the stove before the exit no issues there. Definitely going double wall inside just wondering what brand everyone recommends possibly other than ventis. Ashful is not far from me at all

DVL by Duravent is good imo.

I don't have experience with other pipe.

Ashfuls.has many stove-years experience with ashfords (he has two, so each year counts twice :-) )

What chimney pipe brand is it connecting into?

That should work. Their DSP stove pipe is not my favorite but it will get the job done.

Decided to take a stab and go with the all fuel hst system. The Supervent thimble would be short for my wall thickness by 1/2”. And the all fuel system will allow me to go to the duravent dvl system so I feel a little better about that. And the all fuel is 304 inner and outer liner. So we will see, can’t be worse than duraplus or supervent.

I was actually driving all over Bucks on Saturday, when this was posted! Family is from New Hope, or specifically the farmland south and west of town, and I grew up just a few minutes WSW from there.

Anyway, I couldn't be more thrilled with my BK's, they've really done well for me, despite some pretty hard use and a total lack of attention or maintenance on my part. I'd guess I have 80-90 cords thru the pair of them, still on their original door and bypass gaskets. I haven't even pulled the chimney off either since 2015, but I do plan to bore-scope those this year. I started my own business in 2022, and so things have been beyond crazy-busy, recently.

I've operated these stoves in a few different modes, as my work and home life situation has changed over the years. I used to load one 2x per day, and the other 1x per day, on near constant clock cycles with the burn rates adjusted to be down to barbeque coals just prior to reload. They are wonderfully consistent in that mode, putting out surprisingly even heat over the entire cycle, thanks to their thermostat behavior. But now I'm home all day, and my desk is quite literally less than 15 feet from one of the stoves, so I've fallen back to a mode of just loading it when I feel I want more heat, and they work great in this mode too.

PM me if you want any more specifics, since I don't check this forum too often anymore, due to the obnoxious advertising that makes surfing this forum much less pleasurable than it used to be. If you PM, I should get an email, which will remind me to check back.

To the new hearth.com site owners, from an older member: your advertising is ruining this forum! So many damn banners and pop-ups on this site anymore, you can't even get to the basic navigation button without clicking to hide the advertisements. Absolutely the worst forum I've seen in a long time, in this regard. It's the primary reason I don't spend much time here, anymore.

Yeah im in Churchville now, grew up in sellersville area. But have many friends and family up the road from you in Telford off Allentown rd. Do most of my processing up there. I’ll probably start a build thread since I have all the chimney pieces now and got started today. The buck 80 insert is a great unit it’s just the room position isn’t the best for heating the whole house unless I have the fan blasting, plus we may be doing an in law suite over here which led me to want to throw a stove in the other living room which will be much more conducive to heating the entire house. And I’m hoping by next year when I get further ahead on wood to eliminate the need for the boiler unless we obviously go away for 2 days or more.

Same boat. Hampton hi300 since 2013. I was hot in the ass for over a month for a new stove . Research, getting prices, testing blowers measuring ,arguments with wife u name it. Had a moment of clarity when I realized I was gonna spend 4000k or plus for no good reason. Soo keeping the stove. I love it it's dialed in . Yeah maybe an new one burns a little longer or puts out a few more btus but not enough to justify the prices. The buck is a good one

For those unaware, Buck Stove Co., is located in Spruce Pine NC. Their offices were wiped out and the factory is fine but no power yet. The employees and their families have been adversely affected by the hurricane. Here is their link for a chance to donate with 100% going to their employees.

Damn that really stinks! Maybe I’ll sell the buck 80 and donate the money to them.

The reality there is unfathomable to most people. Entire towns have been washed away.

Yup. And you have private citizens using their own helicopters to fly rescue people around because the government isn’t doing what it should be doing.
That's BS. The scope of this disaster is huge. It may end up being one of America's worst. There is a massive effort by local, state, and national entities together with neighbors helping each other. All are on the ground working together. There are many locations where the infrastructure and roads are gone and the only way in is by pack mule or helicopter. Recovery from Helene is going to be a long, long road for many.

Whichever stove you wind up with, the Buck or a different one, you can add one of these controllers in line it will take care of the noise. I've been running one for years on my Buck 91. Those fans are loud but move a lot of air.

It already has a rheostat on it to control speed. I’m already in the process of installing a blaze king Ashford in my other living room.
