I've been in the Pioneer Tunnel coal mine, a tourist trip into a coal mine that closed back in the depression. we had to drive through Centrailia to get to it. Talking to the certified miner/tour guide I found out the fire isn't burning the coal, it is actually burning the oil in the shale between the coal layers. They know this from digging up a coal fire somewhere else. If they ever dig down to put the fire out most of the coal won't even be burned, not enough O2 down there for that.
back in the day shale went into the tailings pile, today if you own one of those dump hills, power plants are buying it up.
Did that tour and the train ride. Pretty interesting to show your kids what real work involves and the dangers associated with it. No free rides in a coal mine and no freeloaders. Everyone thinks coal is in a nice horizontal vein but in reality as the mountains were pushed up, the vein sloped up with the same angle. That tour points it out very well.
Pellets are also scarce here in NE Maryland / Northern DE too. Seems the pallets empty out as fast as they get unloaded.
Short supply isn't limited to pellets, some coal suppliers in this area are also running short on certain sizes. Best to stock up in the summer / early fall if you have a place to keep a pile, even better if you don't have to shovel snow off the top of the pile to get to it!
do the lackawana coal mine tour to see horizontal mining, the ride down is interesting, but once you are down the mine is rather flat, the difference is the mine is on the floor of the Scranton Wilkesbarre valley more or less. Both mines are worth the trip, the Lackawana mine also has a nice museum to give you a good idea of life in the valley and factories at the time (I would have gone for farming myself, it paid as well and you could expect to die from old age)
Don't want to turn this political but most of the coal supply issues are due to administration policies. I sell coal out of our yard every winter and usually have 50 ton ,,,I like having 100 ton minimum in the bins by end of Aug. I couldn't get coal all summer do to non permitting issues. Completely out at the start of winter.
Ended up sourcing coal at another supplier after dozens of calls. Wasn't happy with the quality.
I wrote that and tomorrow WE are getting 4" of snow and an inch of ice! AND NO ONE knows how to drive down here. Witness the last tiny snow storm in Atlanta with 1000 accidents in one day!You guys up there in Pa have been getting clobbered

I know Shawn well,went to school with himMy 'stock' answer is 'what in the H are you doing burning pellets when you are sitting right on top of the largest deposit of clean burning anthracite coal in the world? AND it's $170 a ton if you haul it! AND it has about 40% more btu's per pound. AND the modern, beautiful coal stoves build right in your back yard can put out 2-3 times more btus/hour! WTF?

Same issues here in Hampton Roads VA. All the stores order their last pellet in Jan and hope it last through march. The only saving grace this year is that a local store ordered 50 tons of pellet by accident. New employee wanted to order 1 ton (50 bags) She checked the box and put the amount at 50 units not knowing that the unit was a pallet of 50 bags each.....
She'll probably turn out to be a hero when EVERYONE finds out they are the only store with pellets........... if they didn't fire her.
