Thanks for the info - we've been browsing around on the OC site and liked some of the ledgerock - I think that's definitely what we'll go with then. One thing I've not really been able to figure out - how much thickness does the stone add, not including the durock? And did you let it extend a little beyond the fireplace, or did you design it so the rock is exactly flush? Thanks!!
Beekeeper, the fireplace is flush with the surrounding Duroc, so the stone projects out past the fireplace. This particular stone averages about 1" to 1-1/4" in thickness. Each of these stone companies have a spec. sheet that gives the approximate dimensions of their products. I had brick leftover from the outside walls so I just cut 2" inches off the brick to make the border around the fp unit. The bricks are adhered directly to the Duroc with mortar and screws. So the brick border stands out a little past the stones. I dug out some construction photos that may help.

My friend, this is incredibly helpful. I may have mentioned earlier - I'm getting ready to frame up a similar structure for a KozyHeat z42, and was a little unsure how to handle the durock and stone. I've tiled before, but never fooled around with the cultured rock. These pictures are great and will be a big help. Thanks for taking the time - hopefully some others will find this useful as well.

That looks great ! I was going to put my Northstar unit flush with the wall, but from the side I think the man made stone might look fake. I think I need to build some sort of chase on the inside so the thin man made stone looks real. Your deal looks really good. What is the depth of the chase from the wall ? Also how tall and deep is your hearth extension (in front of the fireplace) ?

huskyokc, in my installation, I sheet rocked the wall and then framed a chase the full depth of the 7100 unit which was about 24". The completed chase depth from the wall to the front rock face is 27". I made the hearth out of (4) Owens Corning hearth stones. The finished hearth is 13" above the floor and 19" deep. Just finishing our first burning season with the 7100 and I can say it has performed great, we have really enjoyed it! Best of luck with your project.
