Single mom, here, so the woman is def in charge of the fire...my next task? Getting my teenage daughter to start/tend a fire. So far she has shunned the idea because she doesn't want to get slivers or her hands dirty from newspapers. sigh.

Gloves, my dear, get her some gloves.

Mine's taking down the trees now, instead of me ;-)

100 years ago women ran the home's central heating. Then the weekend came to the pesants and suddenly men were stoking the coal furnaces/boilers and burning down houses. Men didn't know what they were doing. One of the biggest sales pitches for kerosene/diesel oil burners was the piece of mind that your husband wasn't down in the basement trying to shove one more lump of coal into the firebox.

My nine year old daughter starts the fires. We have a contest who can start without a lighter/matches. So far I'm ahead with my cell phone battery and steel wool.

GLOVES! Why didn't I think of that? Anyone know where I can find some heat resistant designer gloves with Swarovski crystals on them? lol Seriously, tho, I WILL get her some gloves, great idea...and I love the idea of having a competition...maybe that will get her into the spirit of burning.
