I have a lot of wood to split but not enough to rent a splitter nor do I know anyone I could borrow one from.
When we bought our house, my brother bought me a traditional maul from Lowe's. It is a nice axe but heavy and with an inflamed elbow, not real easy to use anymore.
So, I went back to Lowe's and picked up a Fiskars after reading about them here. Well, I have seen the light & I believe! ! !
This is one amazing axe and I wish I had known about them sooner. I was splitting pine and the rounds were 18"-24" for the most part. See the pile...some locust on top...did not split that:).

The wood is still pretty wet and the traditional maul just bounced off of the rounds. Enter the Fiskars...and you can see the moisture in this photo.

In general, no more than 3 hits down the middle to split in half. Some knotty pieces took another whack or two, but that was it. Once in half, one hit to split. Absolutely freaking amazing!
About an hour and a half later, I was done.

I am very impressed at how well it split and how quickly I was able to. Brought the wifey out to show her, and she was amazed as well. Best part is the elbow is a little sore, but it doesn't hurt.
Highly recommend it, and yes I love the axe! I was a little leary of the price but so worth it. You so have to try this axe!

I split my dad's whole walnut tree with mine. Works great!

If I could give one suggestion for the OP though, on bigger rounds, go off to the side alittle. It will drive right through versus the center.

+1
I have never split anything in my life, before I watch this dude:

After his lesson, I got the baseball grip technique down and split 3/4 cord with ease.

The other 1-1/4 of silver maple I picked up Sat was way too wet, ended up wedging with an 8 lb Hart sledgehammer. Even with wedging, position the wedge on the edge of the rim made it easy to get the wedge out afterwards without getting stuck in the middle.

Regardless, Jeremy Renner's technique + Fiskar X27 rock!

I am thinking I may have to expand my axe repertoire with a couple of different sizes of Fiskars, just to make sure they are all quality products.
I might be able to convince the wifey if that...did anyone see those pigs flying by???

Behold... The power of the mighty Fiskars.

And because without pictures, it didn't happen. ;)

I usually do...but I felt like a kid in a candy store and common sense chopping didn't kick in until I was a little over halfway through. I was amazed at how easy it was to split..That being said, I was not working hard but I was working harder than I needed to. ;) :)
I split some pine yesterday that was about a third to half-punky. Got the wifey wood for the fire pit and salvaged about half a pallet's worth of pine. I went in to get a drink and the birds decided to have an early Easter Dinner. I let them enjoy the feast.
I also discovered why people get "fooled" by pine. The wifey wanted to know how damp the wood was because we are looking at getting some more wood for next season [Scrounging is hard because I have no pick-up or trailer]. The wood I cut the other day was 14% on the outside. I thought that is too good to be true and of course, it was...inside fresh split 25%. Pine dries fast but not that fast. Anyhoo...
Was a tad chilly and snowy, so we fired up the stove today to enjoy possibly the last hurrah of the season, so the Fiskars got a break today. No worries though for the Fiskars, some friends had some pine and oak cut down and they are leaving it for me because they have a gas fireplace.
Free is good...and I am glad they have a gas fireplace. :) [Yes, the chainsaw & I have plans tomorrow].
