Log Delivery Today

I posted a week or so ago, asking if this was a good deal or not so good deal. Consensus seemed to be it was a good deal, so I went ahead an orderd a load. Truck load of mixed 12 ft hardwood logs, not seasoned. Supposed to yield 9 face cords at 16 inch, That should be 3 full cords. Cost $400. Guy came and dropped the load today. Best laid plans gone awry though, I was hoping he'd be able to back up the clearing on the side yard and drop the load there, but with the warm temps and rain we had last week, there's a thick layer of ice under the snow and he kept spinning and sliding.

Got a little ways up the clearing at least, tilted the bed and only half the logs slide out, pulls forward and a couple more drop off, but the rest are jammed in. Got to give him credit, he really packed the truck tight. We had to beat on a few of the logs with sledges to free them, they finally drop, but now they're in front of the house and almost on the driveway.

I cut up a couple of the big ones that were closest to the driveway to get them out of the way. My 16 inch Poulan handled them OK, but thinking of going to a higher end saw. Stihl or Husky? Ah, that's for another forum

Plenty of exercise ahead.

I gotta find someone who delivers logs like this. Its such a great deal if you have the time and space to process. I mean 150 gallons of oil right now will run you over $400 around here. 3 cords of good wood is basically equivalent to 450 gallons of oil.

I was able to skid and winch some of the smaller and mid-size ones up the hill further with the ATV and its winch. But it is pretty icy there.
I've been throwing down sand and the sawdust from the cuts, should help traction. That or I'll need to get some
chains for the Yamaha

seems like a great deal to me. Up here it's 85$ a cord for birch and 95$ a cord for maple. It is in 100" logs and there is a ten cord minimum. I am thinking about this for next year. I can scrounge a lot of soft woods from my property but it very time consuming. I could double the btus and have more time for my real job if I bought some wood. I've only burned about 2 cords this year so 10 would last a while.

jon, is the price $85 for a full cord of 128 cubic feet or a face cord of about 42.7 cubic feet? If you can purchase a full cord of birch cut and split for $85, and a full cord of maple for $95, jump on it. That's a no brainer. John_M

Just got even better. Was just in touch with a buddy of mine to see how he was recovering from his knee replacement this week. He's doing well BTW, told him abut my wood buy, and he tells me, he's got a splitter another buddy gave to him. Sitting there not being used, come get it any time. I just need to run down to Albany, with the utility trailer. The splitter is on a trailer, but kind of narrow, and he doesn't think it a good idea to tow it 135 miles.

I was cutting a log, then splitting the rounds with a maul, cut another log, split them, so on. Now I'll just buck them all, go get the splitter and do a marathon splitting session.

He's a shirt of your back guy, I'll have to force him to take the case of Heineken as a thank you.

the price is for 8 foot logs. And it is priced per cord. Nobody up here really deals in face cords. They might if you have to have it split or need a small amt. I guess for the loggers to turn a profit, they need to sell in quantity and use the semi to deliver it. I think I might get a load before the ground gets soft (May). Then I can cut it and split it when time permits.

I discovered this year that cutting in the cold doesn't seem to produce nearly as much sawdust floating in the air.
Summertime cutting has me smelling oak for several days even though I only cut on one of them.
