Definitely hickory!!

just look at the branching pattern and see if it has opposite branching or alternate branching - or post a picture of the end of a branch that shows several leaves coming off. that will settle this definitively.

Pignut hickory can have bark that looks just like that. Do a google search for pignut hickory bark and you will see pictures pretty much like that. I'm still thinking hickory. Z

Not sure how they grow them in Georgia but the Op Doesnt think its hickory no metion of nuts everywhere......
