I appreciate the advice and I think that is the way I am going to go. I found a couple of places with Google that make custom doors that might fit in well with the look of my house. We also have a local place that does wrought iron, I may talk with them too.

If they have glass in them make sure it is tempered. Quite a few of the cheapo fireplace doors at the big box stores don't and have been found to suddenly "explode" when the heat was too much.

I'm surprised at that. I would have thought tempered glass would be standard stuff for that application.

I think quite a few of them are supposed to be used only when there is no fire. Essentially being decorative to close off the fireplace when it is not in use. However, I don't know for sure how common that is, just that it has happened.

Nice looking fireplace.

You don't need much heat it seems, but you really like the look and feel of the fireplace. Here are my suggestions:

1.8 cu ft firebox, flush mount, with a clean glass viewing area:

Another flush mount. 1.4 cu ft firebox. clean view of the fire. Little more modern design:

1.2 cu ft firebox. Flush mount. Mix of modern and traditional:

Hey Brian, welcome to the forum. I wouldn't pit an insert in that fireplace. You're going to seriously limit the usage of the fireplace to cold days/nights. If you build a fire in an insert on a mild day or evening you will cook yourself out of the house. Sounds like a good choice to get some glass doors. Good luck!
