Yet another newbie with unrealistic expectations looking for fireplace insert recommendations :-)

If youre willing to have a chimney fire due to laziness just get a gas insert. Pretty fire and ZERO effort.

I know that with a probe mc reader that I have to press the probes firmly and a deep as possible into the freshly exposed face of the wood to get an accurate reading. The difference can be several percent. Add the rough surface of split wood vs planed and I think contact may be the issue.

I’d stick with a secondary tube stove. Some even have fire screens that allow open door burning. (But must only ever get used once or twice and tossed into some junk storage box/pile/shed. )
Thinking the same thing so leaning towards a Pacific Energy "Neo 1.6 Insert LE" or a "Vista Insert LE". Probably will purchase from Coalway in Apple Creek, OH.

You want bigger than 1.6 unless it’s a small room. I have a 1.7 cu ft and 2.4. 2.4 is better. I knew 1.7 was small but it doesn’t get that cold here. Next size up didn’t come in the color I wanted.

Noted on the original posting: "- Fireplace is in a 12' wide x 8' deep inglenook that has an 8'x7' opening to the rest of the house." Don't know if that counts as a "small" room or not (given the opening to the rest of the house). Can go with a bigger insert, just don't want to be roasted out of the room. Think there's an issue burning a larger PE stove with a smaller fuel load and/or not using the fan so as not to get too hot in the room?

Burning smaller loads does work to a point....... but they are best burnt hot and short. Also try to make sure its still stacked tall helps pre heat the burn tubes and get em going.
