Jotul F series stoves (45,50 and 55 TL)

I've decided on a Jotul. Now have to decide F50 or F55. Am I correct that the side clearence is 14 inches? And what can the mantel be reduced to? In a fireplace install

Side clearance (looking at F55 manual) depends on whether you have protected or unprotected walls. It also depends on whether the flue collar heat shield is used or not. Side clearance varies from 5" to 16" depending on those variables. The manual is available on the Jotul site and pages 12 and 13 shows the specifics.

Both F50 and F55 have 1/4" steel according to their manuals. The F45 has 3/16" steel.

What I said is correct, I measured it at the dealer. The steel shell looks like the F50 however it is 3/16", where the F50 is 1/4".

Can someone clarify something for me? The f55 manual states the side clearence to 1 inch trim for a fireplace install is 14 inches. I have approximately 4 1/2 inches, what do I use for a side clearence?

If 4"+ thick I would treat it the same as alcove side wall clearance which is 16". Confirm with your Jotul deaer. If correct, it looks like this could be reduced to 6" with side heat shields on spacers and open at the top and bottom.

Thanks for the reply I meet side clearences no problem. One more question hopefully my last, my mantle at the lowest point sticks out the same 4 1/2 inches then goes up about a foot to the actual flat mantle which sticks out about 8-9 inches. My question is if I put a heat shield on the lowest point where it is 4 1/2 inches will that meet the clearences. I can post a picture when I get home if that helps.

I have both and like them both. One year with the F55 which was excellent... big firebox, long burn times, lots of heat. Happened across a good deal on a F50 TL so I picked it up and stuck that in the basement. Not as much experience with it yet but so far so good, and looking forward to trying the top load and winter grill feature.

The stove is a steel box. There are two cast panels that attach to either side, and I believe the door frame and top are cast as well. I've only had steel stoves so can't make any comparison to a full cast stove.
