My stove arrived today and I now have it in my boiler room. I got an energy king wood bolier.(450model) Its not a gassifier and my plans are to keep a fire going 24/7 and presently to not use any large amounts of storage. I currently have a propane boiler running the hydronic baseboards. I just bought this house so not real
clear on how things are piped but it basically looks like there are two thermostats (upstairs and downstairs) that control calling for heat. My plan is to hook the wood boiler up to the propane boiler. I plan on not using propane at all but decided to keep it as backup or if I am out of town. The energy king also has a built in domestic hot water coil. I will be getting some people to help hook this up that have much more experience than I but unfortunately the heating specialists around here have not installed many wood boilers.
The propane boiler has a 40 gallon or so tank up over head that is hooked only to the stove and does not pipe into the house. Is this the expansion tank?
Also on the domestic hot water. What is the best way to pipe this. The boiler has a water coil inside but I am not sure how to set this up. Should I put a heat exchanger on my DHW or just pipe it into the tank. To complicate matters I have two hot water tanks in seperate places. How should I go about this?

The tank you are describing sounds like an expansion tank, though pictures would help in identifying these things...

It is quite possible that you will need to either replace that tank with a larger one, or add a second expansion tank in order to deal with the increase in system volume from adding the new boiler. In short, the size of the expansion tank(s) depend on the total volume of water in the heating system, there are formulas to figure this out, but I don't have a link to them.

On the hot water, I don't know what the best solution is... Especially given that you have two DHW tanks, it may be a bit tricky - again a piping diagram and maybe a layout sketch will help...
