As others have said . . . I would be more worried that in the heat of the moment by pulling out the wood I might have an errant ember escape.
My own recommendation . . . based on a (very) few times when I have had to leave before the fire was at the point where I would like it to be . . . keep things closed and turn down the air all the way. At best you get a decent burn. At worse, you end up with a smoldering fire and a wee bit of creosote that will be cleaned out the next time you inspect the chimney. No worries.
