I broke one when I inadvertently caught a Barbed wire fence while cutting near a fence line. The saw just stopped cutting and the chain was left on the ground. Dont discard the chain, have a new link put on it, sharpen and away you go. Still using the chain to this day. Done some stumping, but shy away from it BC of the dulling effect. Nice of your BIL to get you some quality chains!

Feeling the Heat
Never broke one, but I've certainly taken teeth off. Had one instance where I installed a new chain and found some serious steel in the tree on either the first or second tank of gas that new chain had seen. It was a big ash, hit it and the saw jumped right out of the log. My friend's father started walking towards us as soon as he heard that and was shaking his head. As I'm inspecting the saw he said, "I'm sorry, I forgot." Apparently, there was a gate on that tree when he was just a kid and it came off about 50 years ago. However, I can tell you, the hinge bolt was just as solid as the day it was made 
All teeth looked fine to me, dull due to the fact I was cutting around soil etc.
I believe this chain was just old and spent! It came with the saw when I bought it, it was totally dull. I brought it back to life but it never cut so well. That is why I decided to attempt a stump with it. Well, you will not see me cut stumps again.

Have thrown chains a time or three, saw still sports a mangled stop to prove it but have never had one break.
Broke a couple of cutters in a bind. Was new to chain sawing then and a big willow oak sat back while I was making a back cut. It was one of those "let's not try that again" moments when you learn what felling wedges are for.
As I understand, stress can cause a chain loop to break. Overheating, insufficient oiling, poor construction, metal fatigue are culprits.

Hundreds of tanks of fuel and I've never snapped a chain. That must have been unnerving to say the least.

I've thrown quite a few chains... almost always on some 1" sapling that is in the way... back on point I've never broke a saw chain.... my grandfather did once.... mangled his left hand too.

I've thrown them or the just jump off the bar.
I've only broke one just recently. One of the links broke
It was an old chain I think it was once pinched and the saw hung at an angle stressing the chain.
Didn't sound loud .. I thought I just thru the chain .. Broke the Poulin chain tensioning tab/hook/nut..
