How far do you drive for wood?

I've heard several people talk about getting tree services to drop off wood at your house. How to go about setting that up?

Check the free section in craigslist. The tree services that offer free wood usually drop off logs that need to be bucked. They do it for free because they're usually located in areas that charge for disposal and dont have enough room to process and store split firewood. Some of these services charge for delivery if they have to travel more than 30 minutes, but its usually worth it

I'm kind of bummed about it too. I've got at least 10 dead ash tree's in the 24"-30" range and many others closer to 10-12 inches in my small 1.5 acres of woods. A lot of them will fall on the other side of a 10' deep creek bed and be really hard to get to. The good news is that leaves more space for my hickory trees to grow.

30 yards out the back door. With the kubota about 2 minutes. We have 22 acres all forested but for 2 acres around the house. Here we have dead red oak standing ( hundreds of them) that I now have two people from this site and two local towns people cutting to help them out.

Like everything else in life, the gathering of firewood depends. Real life example: I have a place I can cut firewood any time I want that's about 25 minutes away. The problem is that I have to fall/buck/limb once I'm there. It takes a good day to get a cord in the back of my truck. If I can drive an hour, load for an hour, and drive back I'm out only 3 hours and only one of that was work.

I think "How accessible is the wood?" is a better question than "How far do I have to drive for it?"

I'm with Bigg Redd here. I went to an ash scrounge 4-5 miles from my house. Whoopee, I think. When I get there, the tree is in their fenced in yard. The tree is 150' away from the man-gate. She had a beat-up wheelbarrow, but the yard had too many divots from the tree falling to use it. Of course it was 95 degrees and no shade since the colossal ash was down... I brought my own wheelbarrow for the next few trips. But still, ouch.

WELL, this weekend I drove an extra ~80 miles for 1.5+ cord of beech, red oak, white oak, and hard maple. My grandpa-in-law is logging his woods. This means 4-6 foot trunk sections that were too long for the semi as well as more tops than I could work in a lifetime. Needless to say, I'm going back down with the 3/4 ton truck and the 16 ft stock trailer here soon I figure it's less than $100 round trip in fuel, and I can haul 4+ cord with that set up.

Have gone 30 min.+ to help out 3 coworkers clean up trees- 2 big locusts, (super) 1 decent Mulberry(very good) and 1 giant yard bird soft maple (NEVER AGAIN).
I would go out of my way to help again if quality stuff is there. Have 11 sloped, rocky, wooded acres, but less than half is easily accessible as of now.

If it's accessible I have driven as much as 45 minutes. Usually, and more recently, I've limited myself to driving no more than 20. The reason being plenty of downed trees on my own property plus family saying I can cut on their land. Since I only have a Ranger it seems a bit silly to drive 45 minutes for a quarter cord.

I count myself lucky. The furthest I have to drive is 15 miles on pavement and another 5 or 6 on dirt. Standing, dead and dry lodgepole. I frequently get wood closer when CalTrans has been cutting along the highway.

Four wheeler and trailer to the back of my property. That is why I burn it's easy and I don't have to ask people for anything.

I have done a few trips of over an hour to collect wood from designated firewood collection areas. I just made a day trip of it. Took my wife, went and had lunch in a country pub in the mountains.

Here's a pic from one of the trips. Great to spend the day exploring in the 4x4 in a beautiful area of our country....They weren't the most lucrative wood trips, but still a nice day..

I drove 45 miles for this:



It's only a 4x8 trailer with B rated tires. I ordered C rated tires so maybe i'll feel a little more comfortable adding more wood when i go. But to drive that far for this amount of wood isn't good. It's unfortunate too, this guy has a whole huge pile of wood cut to length that i'd love to go through, I just have no way to transport.

All of the 10 cords or so of wood on my property came from within my zip code, except one truckload of Red Oak from a friend's house about 25 miles away. It was a visit and I did him a favor getting some Sandy droppings off his property. All the wood that I replenish with this year will be from within the zip code. Some less than 1/4 mile from the house.

I had a friend cut down a few oak trees. He lived 30min away. If he was not a friend I would not of done it. Other than that, the wood comes to me.

I will be in that position soon. I may have to find someone to cut here too, rather then waste the wood. Mine will be hundreds of ash trees,,yea,,hundreds.

Stopped and got a load of poplar from the tree man I had contacted. Imagine my surprise when I show up with chainsaw in hand to find split and seasoned wood that he was giving away. It's poplar, but still. Got one load today and there is at least two cords left he said I could have...for free. I'm a firm believer in doing the right thing though so when I go back I'm going to throw some green his way.

I have driven up to an hour ... but it was partly for the wood and mostly to help out an older friend who was looking for help in cleaning up the lot at the new house she had bought.

I'll go about an hour. I enjoy getting out to play in the woods. I get some off my property, or from a neighbor, but the bulk of my wood comes from permits. They require a little more driving but it's fun. It's sort of like hunting in that it's exciting when I find a good area.
